Hello again Mates,

I have a question about OMC tilt/trum unit #173827 Vs. #773530. I have a 1981 16 ft. Glastron SSV-151 with a 70 hp Johnson and want to add power tilt/trim to it. I was looking at OMC add on power tilt/trim kit #773530 that looked like it would fit my application then ran across add on power tilt/trim kit #173827.
Are these both the same kits that the part numbers have changed? Is one a three wire and one a two wire? What is the difference between the three wire and the two wire (besides the one extra wire)? Is one better than the other? I understand that these add on kits come with everything including the guage and the up/down switch that requires you to drill a hole and mount it. Any way to wire it thru a factory tilt/trim switch in the handle? Mine doesn't have one so would I have to replace the whole control box or can I change just the handle? Sorry for all the questions and thank you in advance for any help.

The 2 wire motors are newer and much easier to replace, sources for the 3 wire motors are getting scarce. I will supply wiring diagrams for both. Be sure which unit will fit on your outboard, they mount differently, and you did not mention the year of your outboard, only the boat. Im unsure of the prices you have for the units you found, but check out this website, the guy is in Florida and is very trustworthy, I have ordered a few off him for a very decent price, he ships asap.

From a 1981 parts list: This may have been the transition year from 3-wire to 2-wire motors. Both are listed on the engine parts list. The 3 wire lists as 391013, superceding to 435946. The two wire lists as 391037. If you look at the OB parts and accessories section of the same 1981 catalog, it lists only 173675 as the trim assy, superceding to 173827. The Parts and accys part numbers (last two #'s) are for a "complete" kit, which may include wiring and the trim switch, which you would need. The 3-wire system uses a remote-mounted solenoid box which wires inside the boat, usually under the splashwell. The 81 two wire box may also mount same place. On later model two wire systems the relay box which is usually bolted to the back of the exhaust cover under the cowl. FYI, the 173827 is the 3-wire and lists new for over $1000, so you may choose to investigate purchasing a used one-there are many around. You should be able to just change the handle.

Hey there,

Thanks for all the good info guys. My 70 hp Johnson is model # J70ELCIH which according to my research is a 1981. Proabably the one that came with the boat. I have a chance to purchase both add on tilt/trim units...which one should I go with and which one will definitely fit my application? Thank you again for all the info.

On the link posted is a complete unit rebuilt for $752. That includes the relays and box (which you will need if shopping elsewhere) and can be used where an original 3 wire system was used. I would go with the 2 wire setup, the availability being the main factor. Also try online classifieds such as ebay or craigslist, remember though that you are shopping at your own risk so to speak, and I can guarantee that MOST of these units will not be fully rebuilt, and may need some troubleshooting when you get them.
