Does anyone know whether I will damage my Johnson 175 if I try to help set containment booms in the Biloxi (Ms) Marsh - or if I run thru this eco disaster spill while trying to protect wildlife? I want to volunteer, but don't want to lose my boat in the process. i ask b/c I just got an email from my insurance company advising hauling out. Anyone? PLEASE advise

If the cooling system sucks up some of that crude, you could have problems then or later. If it doesn't clog the cooling system, it will coat all of the metal surfaces and interfere with heat transfer. Also, the stuff will absolutely make your boat hull look like crap and will be very, very hard to clean off completely.

It's a real disaster, and I salute you for wanting to help. It's just something you need to consider before committing your boat to the task.

Thanks for your response. Not worried about getting the hull clean - considering the face of the problem - BUT don't believe I want to kill my engine. So you're saying it will clog it up if we run thru the crude. IS there any difference between oily water and that thick crude re: injury to the engine? Like if it's thick, it's worse? What about oily water with just some oil in it?

Good on ya for wanting to help but I wouldn't want any oil/water combo running through my engine.

Very laudable idea RFG......however I would leave laying oil booms to the experts.
It looks easy to do but I am sure there is more to it than meets the eye.

Crude oil is thick and black....however I have read where this stuff is not the heavy crude....more of the light sweet stuff. For me, crude is crude and I would for sure not want ANY of it coursing it's way inside the water passages of my outboard engine.

Find the local gathering spot for volunteers, arm yourself with rubber boots and gloves....and get ready to help wash oil off the birdlife and any other critters you come across that will hold still for you and not snap off your hands.

Hang in there......the Government is coming.

mmmm....ya right

Personally I wouldn't run that stuff through my outboard due to the reasons stated earlier. Once that junk coats the internal water passages it will then cause any other small contaminants in the water like sand, alga and the like to cook to the surfaces.

That stuff floats. Your intakes "may" be below it. Tuff cleanup in any respect. Cudos and good luck.

There is the fact that BP is going to pay all legitimate claims for damages but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Sounds like your insurance company is laying down a 'paper trail' that will exempt them from any damages. Apparently they have some experience in claims related to oil spills....

That fact alone should answer your question!

Do the volunteer work (hats off to you), but leave the rig home.

Kudos to you redfishgirl! :)

As a recreational fisherman and wildlife enthusiast, I am really worried and upset at this oil spill. I am glad there are people like who care and go out of their way for the environment.

As an engineer, I know there could have been some more safety checks and PM's on the equipment that would have prevented this disaster from escalating to the way it is now.

As an engineer, what is your source of information that makes you able to use the word "know".

Is there a blow out valve that is strong enough to shear off a tool string, for instance? What are the odds of a blowout occurring after drilling has ceased and while the withdrawing string happens to be in the valve?

Oh, and BP routinely is careless and could care less about losing a piece of gear like that drilling platform, aren't they?

Excuse me for getting my shorts in a knot, but there is way too much "professional opinion", which is usually known by a more colorful name floating around, and it is not helpful.

Kudo's for putting necessity ahead of cosmetics. If you don't mind a stained hull, check with the pro's about a flushing solution that will take out the sticky residue.

If your water intakes stay below the surface, you probably won't take in enough oil sludge to clog things up. I'm sure you won't be asked to tangle with anything more than stray oil, and not even be allowed to go through major slick. Be sure BP, or whoever is footing the bill is on the hook for clean up maintenance, including water pump service, and a degreasing flush, and go for it. They'll probably even volunteer a hull refinish for you if you have a lot to offer in equipment for their needs. You could come out prettier (pun intended) than you are now.

Sorry if upset anyone, but that's just my humble opinoin. I know i dont know everthing, thats why i'm here asking for boating advice. Sometimes you can't plan on every variable and I understand, its happened to me. I just hope the drilling companies learn from this incident.

Still, kudos redfishgirl!

Re: Oil Spill Damage?

Just read this on Yahoo morning......

"Recovery jobs were first seen as a goodwill gesture but soon turned into a public relations nightmare when it was learned that BP was not promising to cover potential liability damages to local boats or crews."

Yes your water intakes are below the surface on an outboard......but how often have you run in rough water and have heard that unmuffled sound when your lower just left the water and just sucked air and in this case "what ever is on the surface"
