Re: No Oil pressure after changing oil.

I would try pulling the plugs, grounding the coil wire and, spinning it over with the starter to see if the oil pressure comes up.

Not a bad suggestion... I would still add a few extra quarts to make it easier for the pump to re-prime itself, then drain the excess once the pressure is back.

Re: No Oil pressure after changing oil.

engine temp shot right up and no pressure registered so I shut it down quickly.
Engine Temp?
I think you might have disconnected a harness or have some other electrical issue. The engine isn't oil cooled. If the temp shot up in the few seconds of trying to find oil pressure (assuming water flow was good), it sounds like something electrical.
Replace the oil pressure sender with a mechanical gauge and test.

Spin the oil pump with a drill before you decide to spin your engine over without oil pressure. If you can't get pressure, you won't have ruined your engine while trying to get pressure.

Have you tried a different filter as suggested?

Just to add to this - just spinning the pump with a long shaft and drill will not do the job. You need to use a priming tool that blocks off the oil galleries. Or an old distributor with the cam gear removed. The tool can either be bought or a lot of auto parts stores will have it available in their loaner tool area.

There should be enough oil on the bearings to allow it to crank for awhile. I'd try cranking up oil pressure a few 15 second cranks. If it doesn't happen then I go to pulling distributors and spinning the oil pump shaft with a drill and adapter I made for priming new engines. You did say it seemed to take awhile to prime the last time you did it. I might suspect an oil pickup tube problem like a small crack. Seen it happen.

Thank you all for your help. I would never have thought of these issues. Unfortunately life gets in the way and I've not had the time to deal with this. Hopefully tomorrow I can try both approaches and update this post with success. 33 years of changing oil in my cars I never had any kind of problem so thanks again.

I'm surprised that the pump won't refill. I've left 100's, maybe 1000's of vehicles drain overnight when the sump gets filled with diesel or gas from flooding in extreme cold. And I've never had a single one fail to pump.
Did you knock some wires loose?

This - I've never heard of an automotive/marine oil pump losing prime. I always drain the boat and cars overnight or longer - no patience to sit and wait for it to trickle out.

The advice here is sound.
1) different oil filter
2) check the wiring/ground to your dash

I would normally agree but I had it happen on my Jeep ('87 4.0 XJ). It was a very worn motor that I was refreshing the bottom end on.

It was apart in the driveway for a couple of weeks. I went to start it after the refresh and got no oil pressure. I shut it down and tried to get a prime spinning the oil pump with a drill and, nothing. Tried and tried and tried to get a prime and couldn't.

I pulled the pan off and put a new oil pump in it, I got a prime right away and always had good oil pressure after that.

that's ok that it took so long because for one thing it brought up some interesting thought processes of what has happened to some in the past, and two, we're just happy you came back on to provide an update of succes.:)

I have been using Napa for quite a few years now. Glad you got it going.

Curious as to what was wrong with the filter?
Is it clogged?
