New Volvo Question

I took the boat out for the maiden voyage today and it ran great for the most part. This is a brand new boat and I just need some info. First I have noticed the prop does not spin free like some of the other outdrives, is this normal. Second my idle speed is around 1000 RPM, this seems a little high but yet again I am new to volvo. Third I think is connected to the high RPM, when shifting into forward and reverse there is a loud clunk and the boat thrusts forward or reverse quickly. I also could hear a quiet whining, not loud and seemed to go away as the boat got over 2500 RPM underway. I know this is a lot of questions but like I said I am new to volvo.

Thanks
Noob to Volvo

Re: New Volvo Question

1000 is way too high and yes, that is what is causing the clunk. Not sure on that exact engine but you should be in the 650 rpm area give or take. Your manual will tell you for sure..

Don't keep running it like that or you are going to damage the drive..

Re: New Volvo Question

Called the dealer who is about 2 hours away. He explained how to set the idle speed. I would take it to him but dont want to pull it two hours for him to set a screw. Hope that solves the thud problem also, I think it will. Ah the joys of boat ownership:D

Re: New Volvo Question

What does that do to your warranty if you start mucking with the idle screw?

Also you do NOT want to use the tach in the dash to do this. You need to get an induction or strobe tach to set it properly. The dash tach can be off by quite a bit, even on a brand new boat.

Are there no other shops in your area? Doesn't have to be your dealer necessarily.

Good idea.. BTW I don't doubt they could walk you though this. It's a simple setting with the right tools. It more a matter of SHOULD they be walking you through this on a NEW boat..

Ok got it running slower now it is about 650 warm idle. It sounds better idling also. I am sure it will not engage so hard now.

Re: New Volvo Question

Ok I got it out on the lake and the RPM's went up again at idle speed. It is going back to the shop. They said they will take a look at it again. Oh once again the joy of new boat ownership working out the kinks. I just wish I had got the boat localy so I would not have to pay for the set up stuff again.

Re: New Volvo Question

If i paid anywhere close to retail on this boat I would realy be angery. The steal on the boat is keeping me calm. I paid 10k less than retail so a few hundred steams me but I will live with it. I also am having the boat shop add in the dual batt and switch. Figured I would get that done while I was taking the boat in.

Re: New Volvo Question

Ok got the word from the shop, they had to ajust a cable and the idle speed. Should fix the problem. While the boat was in the shop I was screwing around on volvo.com and noticed their recall section, Guess whos boat has a recall on the carb. I called the shop and they were going to look into that while the thing is there.

Re: New Volvo Question

I would be wondering why Volvo didn't send you a recall notice in the mail. Did your dealer actually register your engine for you? Could you post your engine serial number? I could check and see if it's actually registered.

Re: New Volvo Question

4012202735 is the motor serial number, I done know if they sent in the registration stuff. I have soem paperwork that looks like it is for vp warranty. The dealer I bought the boat from is 2 hours away and the dealer in town says the problem is with the set up and it is not covered under warranty. It cost me $45 for the re cal no bigdeal. The carb is under the recall and I would doubt If there was a letter sent I would have got it by now. I just bought the boat 1.5 weeks ago

Re: New Volvo Question

That SN is not registered, time to call the dealer and find out why. The thing is, your problem is a warranty problem that should be fixed. But since it isn't registered, no one can fix it under warranty.

Better yet, call Volvo, you should have a warranty booklet with all the phone numbers with your owners manual and other info. You seem to have a slacker for a dealer.
No matter what they want to do with the boat, the engine warranty starts from the day you buy it.

Re: New Volvo Question

Well the story behind the dealer was that he was going under and had to get rid of the boat. I bought the boat cheap and I dont think he wanted to do any more work on the boat than he had to. I have the volvo warranty information and will call them and see what I need to do to get it registered. I will let you know how it goes. It is frustrating but I will get it worked out. Thanks for your help.

Ouch is right Mike, lucky for kkr he stopped here and found out before things went real bad (and real expensive for him) with his engine and outdrive.

That kind of stuff from a dealer just pis....................... never mind.

Well, lets hope he makes out OK. I wonder how many people never get the power packages registered at any dealer? I mean most won't know until they have a problem in the warranty period and most people I suspect don't have trouble in the warranty period. But if they did what a mess..
