Re: New Toy (for vinyl work)

Hey Brett,
Just wanted to let you know I got my pneumatic 20 gauge wide crown stapler from harbor freight in the mail and tried it out. Worked like a charm. For $20 its a no brainer... Here's a pic of what I got done today...

Figured I'd show off my sewing skills.. .or lack thereof lol!

Happy New Year!!

Heck, that looks pretty good to me...I'd rock it! That must be the insert for the sun lounge? I'm filling mine in with foam and covering it with a simple pattern of arctic white and navy blue...

Deck Patterns.jpg

I bought the same stapler at HF for $18.56. Haven't tried it yet! What psi you running? I wanna see the whole deck when finished!

I ordered a welting foot for the Juki today and picked up a few more sewing goodies (thread snippers, spray adhesive, material guides and seam tape.) I'm expecting the vinyl after next week...given the holidays and most likely everyone at veada is prolly on vacation?

I played around some more today with french seams and stuff...I gotta slow this thing down! I really liked

I just finished up a project with the HF 20 GA wide crown stapler and it didn't miss a single staple, 2 boxes or 2000 staples. Certainly one heck of a lot better than using my ol' Arrow electric stapler. I was running 80PSI into particle board (non-boat).

One thing to be aware of, the stapler uses 7/16" wide staples,,, which seem to be an odd-ball size. I picked up a couple boxes (1000 staples) at HF when I bought the stapler.

Yep Brett, that is the insert for the sun lounger!! Figured I'd go back with the same. What a PIA to put together though with the curves, had to redo 3 times. I'm was running about 100psi figuring its starboard so much harder than wood. Had not one issue. Starting on the main section today.

Fishrdan, I was using monel T50 staples which worked fine.

I couldn't find Stainless Steel at HF otherwise, i'd picked 'em up! I can get whatever size at Fastenal or Western Fastener if the T50's are incorrect? A lot of reviews I read said the T50 (from Arrow) is what to use?

Thanks for the confirmation on the staples Further! I'm jonesing to start my vinyl work...I'll attach all the progress as I go, before and after pics. I just gotta work on the control factor for the speed! Today I'm gonna modify the treadle somehow to control speed. I can get pulleys at Ace Hardware, I'm gonna look into that?

Yup a smaller pulley is the cheapest, easiest way to slow that machine down. I changed the pulley(s) on both my Consews a long time ago. Much better control going slow but still plenty fast wide open.

You got that machine for free? How do you sleep at night ... Heh heh heh. Nice find!

LOL, I've just never been afraid to loan my stuff or my talents, without strings. Once in awhile, Karma pays me back...in a good way! I'm gonna look into a smaller pulley...BTW, Consews are nice machines too! I was actually thinking of buying a singer industrial that's up for auction at Ft. Carson...I might still bid. This one just fell into my lap though?!

Wow, that's great.

I truly admire those that can work with upholstery.

Good for you. Ya I'm a firm believer in Karma too, do my best to stay on the plus side.

Yeah a back-up machine is always nice. If'n ya can get the one at auction cheap, go for it. That's all a Consew is, basically, is a gussied up version of a Singer Industrial. 'Least the 200 series.

I will tell ya that once you get used to one machine, you won't wanna sit down in fronta another one. Mine are nearly identical, but have distinct personalities. I can't imagine what it'd be like to switch manufacturers.

Congrats on your find & best of luck in your new endeavor. Happy New Year!

Thanks V...keep watching this thread and my Chris Craft resurrection, I'll post many before and after pics...hopefully I can do the iboats crew proud!

Happy New Year!

Check out the reviews, several people complaining that they couldn't find 7/16" wide crown staples for the stapler. It looks like they changed the stapler, and the new one uses 7/16 staples, at least that's my take on the comments. If the 1/2" T-50's fit, that would be MUCH better, and I'd prefer my stapler to use them, but it takes 7/16 staples.

This is the stapler I bought a week ago. 20 Gauge Wide Crown Stapler

X2...

I used it yesterday to tack together a movie screen for my son's projector, works fairly well...loading it defies a little logic, but once you figure it out?! I didn't read instructions...psshhh, who has time for that?

I think most people are "misunderstanding" the size of staples. The "wide crown" (akaT50) describes the top of the staple, where as the 1/4", 7/16", 1/2", 5/8", etc... describes the length of the legs. The 20 gauge size refers to the size of the wire used to make the different size staples.

Narrow crown staples and staplers are used more for heavy duty places, construction, cabinet, furniture uses. I have a Porter-Cable one of those...the staples are like 14/16 gauge, so much thicker diameter wire. I would not use it to assemble anything in a marine application unless I could find stainless steel staples and needed to construct something more substantial (i.e. seat boxes, storage boxes, etc...)

Well...I decided to buy a servo motor instead of having the clutch motor! Here's what I got $105 shipped to my door. I figure since the machine was a freebie, an extra C-note wouldn't make a huge difference!

Should be here on the 7th...about the same time as the vinyl...free shipping too!

Whoops..... I was wrong on that as T50 staples are 7/16 wide  I thought T50's were 1/2" wide, but was wrong as they are 7/16"...

Now, I'm not sure what the people on HF's website were complaining about as I have several boxes of T50's and just popped them into the HF 20 GA wide crown stapler, and they fit just fine.

Sorry for the mis-imformation as I should have double-checked before posting that up.

Re: New Toy (for vinyl work)

im looking forward to hearing if the servo motor has low end to start. I hope it works great and cant wait to hear. a normal machine the motor runs all the time and you engage the clutch. a servo runs when you press on it. so cool. also the comment about your machine is so true you will learn the feel, the sounds, how the treadle feels. what it likes and what it hates. so cool you are way ahead to a simpler job

I wish I had the time to invest in the clutch type motor learning curve? I played around for few hours and it seems I inadvertently kept creeping up the speed. I'll upload a sample speed video in a few hours!
