Re: New Tohatsu TLDI - Runs rough & Dirty plugs after 5 hours - UPDATE

I have a few week old 2012 Tohatsu 50hp TLDI. It has 5 hours on it (I had a hour meter installed when it was new). It ran great at first, but after about 2 hours it started having a pretty solid intermittent miss when cruising along at about 1200-1600 RPMs. Runs smooth at higher RPMs. I pulled the plugs last night just to have a look and man were they dirty. All three were covered with soot. I sprayed them down with some carb cleaner and let them dry and re-installed them. Haven't run it again yet. It came with a new set of plugs, but I was told to installed them after the 10 hour break-in.

I know the motor injects a higher ratio of oil during the first 10 hour break-in, but that being said, is it normal for it to run rough and foul the plugs during the break-in period, or should I go ahead and take this thing in and have it looked at?

Howdy I am Cheryl The Boatlady

I have pretty good knowledge on these bad boys....
So I will tell you what to do like I tell my customers.
Stop what you are doing and read your manual!
Make sure you are doing the break in fully EXACTLY LIKE IT SAYS!
You need to know that this is not stupid this is done for a very good reason, when the cyl is bored it is cross
threaded and have little pieces at the cross that will break off during proper break in, this also allows the oil to be
pushed firmly into the grooves! SO DO YOUR BREAK IN BOYS! LORD!!!
Use Premium fuel mixed with FUEL STABILIZER I like CRC because it don't add any more alcohol.
When you are done using your motor fill up the tank, the less amount of air the less water is drawn into your tank.
Water seperating fuel filter is always supported by me! LOL

Your problem resolves around fuel and fuel delivery, so START THERE. TOSS your gas on the brier bushes or something, go to local gas station get fresh gas, put some in a jar let it set for about 2 minutes and see the seperation of water to gas straight from your gas station. Put your fuel stabilizer in and run it out. FINISH YOUR BREAK IN! If you do have water in your tank and feeding that to that very nice motor you will end up needing to do carbs, you will be able to tell or should by how rich it smells... Good luck to you, HOPE THIS HELPS! :)

How does one week old fuel go bad so quickly? Why is your first post in a one year old thread. It would help if you read the entire thread - The OP had a bad injection seal that was repaired by his dealer. Please do not promote a competitor.

Welcome to the forums, please be mindful of the rules, in this case #6 and #12. Thanks for your understanding.

6. You may not post in the forum to promote any personal enterprise, advertise a business or product, or to solicit responses for contests, polls, or similar. This includes directing members to social networking sites.
The First post of a thread MAY NOT be used to advertise or promote a product, company, internet site, sale, individual, or service. If you wish to promote a product or internet site, please contact iboats for rates/permission. Please remember that iboats is a retail vendor of marine products and do not post anything that would be detrimental to iboats' interests.

12. Please do not post to threads that have been inactive for more than 3 months UN-LESS you are the original poster. We have very active forums and any thread that remains inactive for that long should be considered "dead". It is especially confusing when there is an entirely new question posted to an old thread. This is considered a hijack. Please start a new thread of your own.

UPDATE - 4/26/14 - Hopefully it will help if somebody else out there is having similar issues.

Pictured below is what appears to be the cause of all this headache. It is the battery the Tohatsu dealer installed when I bought the motor. My receipt says it is a 800 CCA battery, but there is nothing on the battery itself saying that it is. Either way, it was either a dude from day one, or just a junk brand that couldn't cut the mustard.

I replaced the battery with a Exide Edge Flat-Plate AGM Marine battery (expensive, but worth it). I also reset the TPS and ECU. Immediately noticed when I started the motor that it spun over faster than it ever has. Tried and tried to duplicate the problem with the motor missing at low RPM's and couldn't. Motor is running the best that it has since the day I bought it.

If you are experiencing a similar problem, consider the battery. Even if your dealer installed it!!

Fantastic stuff that you have finally sorted it!!! :D Not so good that you had all this hassel because of your stealer! :mad-new: (unless is was a faulty battery?! )

My Tohatsu 50HP TLDI engine was fitted at the Tohatsu UK headquarters and they fitted it with Numax xv31mf cxv battery which is 1000 MCA and 110 AH. Also I have heard before that the TDLI engines need heavier duty batteries than normal, obviously it is true!!!

Happy boating! =)
