So I am completely new to this forum, I am not completely new to rebuilding a boat! I had an old sea nymph that I re-built, a long time ago! My new project is a StarCraft! I will post pics as I can, but my wife does most of the pic, and computer tech stuff! (I'm a hands on, building kind of guy, not a tech savvy kind of guy! :p )

I got steal of a deal on a StarCraft 16 ft Deep V "I'm told is a '69", $400!!!!! The coast guard plate reads, " Troller 16 O/B". The badging on the console says "SuperSport 160", and the HID is FO23306779-FO. I'm wondering if I bought a "Frankin' boat". (Something somebody put together from a bone yard!) I don't really care, I want to build a fishing boat! and this seems like a nice one! The transom seams solid for a '69, and the 75 HP 1975 Evinrude motor has good compression and spark! Took all the info, and the bill of sale, to the CO. for the paperwork, and walked out with al the paperwork needed to make it legal on the water! I'm happy! :)

I'll try to get up some more pics, and I know I'll have a ton of questions!

I guess I'll have to wait a bit to post the pic of the boat. I'm quite sure I'll pass three posts reasonably soon!

"...NOTES: new forum members must make 3 posts to the forum before they can upload photos. iBoats will only upload JPEG, JPG, GIF & PNG files. Your file size must be below 700KB in order to upload it to the forum. Linked files (option #3) do not have a size restriction..."

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... I'd sooner think it's a 1979 SS-160, than a 1969,....

I can't say that I disagree, The CO folks accepted all the numbers, and other info, along with the bill of sale. I thought I was going to have issues getting it titled and registered, but we took all the info in, and walked out with the registration, new title, etc..... I was surprised!

My thinking is that this may very well be a boneyard boat. How else does one explain the differences between the coast guard plate and the badging? I think it has been "customized" at the very least! One way or the other, it's mine now, and we have all the legal stuff done with a '69 tile in hand.

I want to get this on the water, and work on fixing it up, as we go. We need to replace the steering, and new batteries, winch strap, transom tie downs, seats, etc.... before it goes to the water. Maybe it will get splashed this year, maybe not.

Time and money will tell.

Mainly jumping in so I remember to follow along, but I'll add

HIN decoder says not valid and a '79 HIN (From SC anyway) should start out STR. Maybe a state generated one I suppose but this does list a '69 SS @16'.

Either way sounds like now that your the legal owner it's water under the bridge. :)

With the paperwork done, I hope to get some water under the boat, as well as the bridge! I can't say I understand it, but I'm glad it's all done.

Now on to the "project".

The info and numbers I gave, came off the boat. The guy I bought it from didn't have any other paper work. I took all the info I had, and our bill of sale, to our Co Treasurer. She issued us a title, and registration based on the numbers I could find on the boat, and the bill of sale.

Right or wrong that is what happened. I was honest, and straight up with everybody, with the information I had. He told me this was a '69.

That being said; after looking at some you tube video, and doing a bunch of independent research, it sure looks like a modified '79 to me. I guess if the Co treasurer is happy, I should be happy too.

Nice Project Boat....There is a VAST amount of knowledge to be had here to help you with your project. Do not be afraid to ask questions no matter how trivial, someone here will have the answer. Remember BOAT means...Bring On Another Thousand...HA! I'll be following this thread to offer any assistance I can.

After looking closer at how they plumbed the live well, I'll be axing that eventually! It serves as the platform for the helm seat so the box will stay for now. Plumbing I'll remove. Thoughts on how to fix the holes in the hull? Outlet is on the side, inlet is through the rear of the boat under the transom board. My thought was a stainless washer bigger then the hole, with a small hole, to put a bolt through; bolt one on each side of the hull. Lots of sealant. What have you done?

Working out what to do with the boat.
So much needs done!
Safety first, function second, cosmetics a distant third! Transom needs reinforcement. It's solid for what it is, but I want this to go for a while without a complete replacement! Preferably aluminum plates, realistically steel plates! ( $) I need to get prices, and figure out a motor stand to hold the 200+ lbs motor while I install and paint the plates!
Next is plug the holes from the live well plumbing. I may re-work the live well, but the way it's set up now is just stupid! [I'm a redneck , but this was set up by a full up hick!]
Steering is locked up so I need to replace the steering assembly and run new cable to the motor and get that working!
Then sort out the electrical! The fuse assembly needs to be replaced, and a lot of this needs to be rewired to put all the axillaries on the deep cycle battery and the only thing on the starting battery is the motor! Safety first!
After all of that I can think about starting the motor! ( 90 dollars later, I know it has good compression, and spark.) I'm told it needs carburetor work, by the guy I bought it from. ( all three carbs, and maybe something with the water pump too. If so, I'll know in the first few seconds, and can shut it down before we have heat damage from running without adequate cooling to the motor!)
Lots to do! This is a project boat!
Wife wants to go fishing! I'll try, but I don't see this boat on the water this year.
$400 dollar boat will be a project! I don't know if I can get this on the water this year or not? I'll try but there is a hell of a lot to do, and only so much money for parts and pieces! Labor is free, (as long as I can do it) but there is a hell of a lot to do!

It sounds like you have some full days of work ahead, but I found that the key to getting there is to do at least one thing even on "off" days, Even if it is just cleaning up a part that has been removed or planning out wiring runs or pricing plywood. It all adds up, you feel like progress is happening and it keeps your interest piqued.

I know I should reinforce this transom for safety, it seams solid for what it is, but the washers on the inside of the transom are "sucking in" This isn't new wood. Appropriate reinforcement should provide enough support to get several years of running without replacing the transom completely! I may do that in the end game, but I want to make this boat usable for now.

After pricing aluminum vs. steel for the transom plate for the outside of the transom, and angle piece for the inside of the transom, I am opting to use 1/4 inch steel. Aluminum would be lighter, but funds dictate I use steel! I'll measure twice, drill holes once! (I hope!) I know it will weigh more but I don't have the funds to use the lighter material.

My question is about paint. I plan to primer and paint the steel, I am open to suggestions as what primer and what paint. What have you used, what do you suggest?

For what you have in steel and paint, you could probably replace the transom wood and seal it well.

What you are proposing is unwise, at best, and is often referred to as a Band-Aid.
