I recently had a boat handed down to me from my father. It was my fathers friends boat, we've spent countless hours on the lake fishing with it. When our good friend passed about 4 years ago we let it sit and didnt use it much afterwards. Well i finally pulled the tarp off and cleaned it up a little bit (pine needles and leaves, the boat was full because the tarp had split). My dad is looking for the paper work but he told me he thinks its an old 65 lone star commander, and that it has the original 65 evinrude 9.5 hp engine. I want to strip the paint epoxy all the seams and rivits inside and out primer and paint it to an original color. My first question is what has worked the best for stripping the old paint? My second question is should i use glovit inside and out to seal all the rivets and seems? My third question is there a special primer and paint that i need to use? And lastly ive googled this boat so many times but for some reason i cant find pictures of original colors and paint schemes does any one have one? Also i will post a few pics when im on my computer later today, sorry for the long post, thank you ahead of time! Also any random i formation on these boats that may be useful would be much appreciated, i just have not been able to find much of any thing about the boat

Hello and welcome to the Iboats.com dry dock, tin division...
First and foremost, before you begin any work on the boat, be sure that you have the title to it.
Then the next step is to post lots of pictures for the aluminum boat guys to look at and help you ID your boat.
After that, restoring it will be a fairly straight forward process that should bring this boat back to better than new condition.
Good Luck and have Fun!

Well, not much to go on, but if it floats, doesn't leak water, and the OB runs, GREAT!

Nice to keep in the family.

Post some better pix & perhaps we can help id her.

Open up a photobucket account, upload some better pics onto there, then click on the pictures you want to post. Then click in the textbox to the right of "IMG" and paste them into your thread.

In terms of stripping the paint....click on the Naden restoration thread in my signature below, and you'll see what worked...and didn't work for me. Your boat looks like mine before I stripped it - I have to begin the rebuild in a few weeks.

If you have original paint on there in decent condition, my advice is don't strip it - sand, spot prime, clean and repaint (look on the threads for advice on this). If, however, your boat is in the condition it appears to be (many thick layers of old paint, then you'll want to strip it to make it turn out well).

Your basic options are: paint stripper; wire-wheeling; or soda blasting (don't sandblast the aluminum). Of all the options I tried, wire wheeling was definitely my preference.

Yep ^^^ If the orioriginal paint is in good shape unless you plan to polish the hull & leave it bare, taking well stuck paint off will only make a lot more work for yourself.

No original paint on the boat, its been painted several times. A wite wheel wont damagethe aluminum? Will it make the new paint look scratchy?
