I would remove the cap and do some serious investigation...

From your vid it looks like there is rot all over the place.

Its not so bad after you get it all cleaned up and ready for the refit :) .

Is it less expensive than wood?

Seacast is way more expensive than wood! When faced with a transom replacement on my 1965 LoneStar, I opted to buy a 1996 boat that was bigger and in much better condition for less than the cost of repairing with Seacast. Good luck!

Oh wow Gemmini! I have to ask, do you have a extra special attachment to this particular boat? A sort of tinglie feeling all over for this particular make/model?

I am looking at a gigantoronomous amount of work, and tons of $$ to boot.

May I suggest a very super serious gut check before you go any further.

If you do forge on, there are plenty of great glasser guys here to help. I'd recommend lots and lots of reading right here on this thread and an excellent job of listening, they know their game.

All the best to ya!:)

Well it?s a project!!! What else can I say!! So what are the major costs in the fixing up is it the wood for the stringers? The Glass? I?m just trying to get an Idea. I realize I could spend a fortune to restore to New and have it last till I am dead and gone, or I could just fix it to last at least the next 5 to 10. It doesn?t have to be showroom, just safe for the family to run a tube up and down the lake or cruise. Anyway so that being said could I just use plywood that?s been glassed or other suggestions to keep it cost effective?

I would wait for the condition of the engine. If it's good and runs well, cut the hull into pieces and take to the scrapyard. Keep the engine & controls aside.

Clean the trailer and make sure it's roadworthy and sell it for $500-$700.

Hold on to the engine until you find another boat for the right price. If you find one cheap that needs an engine, you're set! If you find a great deal on a boat and it has a good engine, sell yours for $1000-$1500. You might just break even on the new boat after selling the engine and trailer.

Gemmini,
I suggest that you read back through these postings carefully and reconsider taking this boat. I'm sure you can find a boat in better shape that this one for $1500 if you're patient. I paid $1300 for mine plus $900 for the trailer and it was stored inside. All I did was put new tires on the trailer, repaint the outdrive and clean the mildew off with Tilex mold and mildew remover plus normal maintenance and it's been good for 3 years so far. (Now, I've got some deck work to do.) I'm sure that there are more like mine out there with people who are paying storage and not interested in boating. As someone already said, the trailer appears to have serious rust. Trailers rust from the inside out and the one you're showing looks dangerously rusted to me. I wouldn't advise towing it far. Good luck.

I would say the damage is done. Try to heat up the garage and let it thaw....your going to be ripping everything out so don't worry about some water in there. Post pics and we will walk you through it.

Thanks for the positive and encouraging response, It was nice to hear some that didn?t just tell me to trash it lol!

Re: New to Boats what a way to start!!

I got the boat and Trailer for free so it was worth taking a look at, I?m not shy to try. but thank you for the advice, I have however seen people tackle bigger jobs with success and happy with their results. I am curious again as to what the challenging parts of the job will be. I appreciate the warning, but I have not seen much advice on what the pros and cons are, or where to start, or how to do it!! I am happy to have the advice, but I like to have information to help in completing my project.

No I do understand the contractual agreements of Storage facilities...however burden of proof would be from the storage vs the owner. That burden of proof could be currently in dispute from the PO ( you would never know if you dont look it up ). Now lets say that dispute is over..then the court would transfer ownership to the storage with a court order.. they cant just start giving away things just because the contract had been breached ? right ?

It would be like saying you stored your 67 porche there..and something got messed up in the billing ( lets even suggest you Didnt pay your storage so now your breach of contract says they can sell your belongings ) I dont think that will hold up in court without a transfer of ownership. Can they really just Give your car away the day after you breached contract ??

I dunno..

YD.

I work at a Marina, which is basically a boat storage on the water :p

I have had a few 'abandoned' boats go through. The Contract that all patrons sign says legal action can be taken if payments are more then 3 months overdue. The last 2 boats that fell into this category got well past 3 months, and as a marina we did not have the authority to take possession of the boats with a snap of a finger. We had to hire a bailiff that legally repossesses the boat. Once the boat is repossessed, a process which usually takes about 2 months(written notices posted on the boat, registered letter attempts, etc), then the marina can legally sell the boat, with a title provided by the bailiff in hand.

Its a great way to get cheap boats... the last 2 both sold for basically the legal fee's associated(30' boats for <$1000) I almost bought one of them

Everything the guys have told you is good advice to start with. own it 1st, is the motor in good order or easily repaired, and is the boat's hull worth your time and $ ? The motor is the deciding factor and could be the most cost to your budget. Wait till your diagnosis of the motor is complete to make your decission if it's good I would buy a tin and put all the controls on and sit it on the trailer and trash the glasser! for a good eye opener read both of Frisco boater threads to see what your in for.

IMG_1004.jpgIMG_1002.jpgIMG_1005.jpgIMG_1001.jpgIMG_1003.jpgI would like to remove the rub rail, but have only found four screws at the rear on either side(8 in total) and have no idea how to pull the rest off. There is a rubber insert in the metal trim, but i am un sure how to get it out any idea?

The screws or rivets will be behind the rubber insert. Take a blow dryer and heat up the rubber, then pry it out with a flat screwdriver...you may need to replace the rubber if it's all dry rotted and breaks in pieces... You can check here for new rubber http://wefcorubber.com/

Sorry Gemmini, don't mean to discourage ya:)

I guess what I am seeing is about $2000 in cash to complete the work (give or take $500) and roughly 70 weekends working on it (give or take 20 weekends) to have that boat ready for family fun on the water.

Hopefully one of the glass guys can stop buy and give you a more firm cost/time estimate.

I can't help but think there is a boat in your area that you could buy for $2000 and hit the water as soon as it's warm enough saving yourself a ton of work. I see that you are just outside Toronto near Lake Ontario. There has to be a pretty good stockpile of boats in that area, eh!

All the best!

Hey Gemmini, I would suggest that you heed everyone's advice on owning the boat 1st. In the mean time, take a look at the thread in my signature. I am nowhere near an expert (actually not very good at this at all), but the current running list of my costs to date in the 1st post may be of some interest to you.

I have done the stringers, deck, carpet, and most of the upholstery so far. Still need to do the transom. I am going to probably go with NidaBond or Arjay for the transom. They are cheaper than Seacast, but still more expensive than wood. However, it is only about $150 more than wood for my particular application. It will likely outlast my interest in the boat, but at least it will still be safe when I give it to one of my kids.

Well Gemmini, It seems that you have a wide variance of opinions, so I'll add mine. I realize that your on a budget and want to get it on the water at a reasonable price and be safe. All I can say is don't get ahead of yourself. Good planning on waiting on the motor check-up. Next, go to the local Service Canada office and ask THEM what you need to register the boat. Boat registry for Canada is a FEDERAL issue. Hold off on removing the lid. You may be doing a lot of work that isn't necessary. The floor has to go anyway. Remove it, clean up everything and see what what needs fixing. Prepare for the worst but don't expect the worst. I'm in Milton on occasion. PM me your number. If I'm in the area soon, I'll stop by, give it a look see, and give you my 2 cents worth.

Re: New to Boats what a way to start!!

I can tell you what is needed, its a total gut job, the transom is rotted, evidenced by the cracking splashwell and condition of the stringers.
They tend to go hand in hand.
First you need to de-rig and pull the engine, build a stand from lumber or get a cheap engine stand on wheels.
You'll need a cherry picker engine hoist or chain hoist.
You ought to get that done before popping the cap.

Completely gut it out, replace all wood and replumb tank, maybe rewire too.

Look around at used boats without so much damage, I would keep the engine and fuel tank .
Compare the cost of a complete rehab, you really can buy a great boat without an outboard for the same price.
Or dive right in and join the madness.
