Brought this home on the weekend 13 hour rounder to Biggs Junction Oregon and back to Grand Forks B.C. Got the 1/2” plywood floor 1/2 tore out, had multiple soft spots probably caused by water sloshing around in the two inside hull compartments, for how long that’s been going on who knows. For some reason that water isn’t draining back to the bilge, possible drain holes plugged will see when I remove the entire floor. . Will check the transom out to see if I’m going to be replacing it too. Has fiberglass stringers which appear to be solid so that’s a plus .To big for my garage and carport so can do the rip and tear thing this winter and have it ready for outdoor glassing in the spring. Gonna get cool around here. Johnson has a bad piston and Tohatsu is a runner. I have a 125hp mercury to put on.

I have most of the floor out and today removed the helm and the cabinet/sink in front of it. I can remove the bad plywood that was under them. Then I have to remove some cuddy bracing for the bed and get the last of the bad plywood that was under there. Then I got about three feet at the stern to remove and then I will check out the transom.
The floor got wet from underneath was a lot of water sloshing around in there when I opened it up.. I don't see any holes to allow water to get into the bilge for drainage. Could it be whoever removed the I/O and installed the pod didn't put in drain holes to the bilge? And the other obvious question is how did the water get in there. Will find out when I peel the last of the stern floor. Will get some pics tomorrow.

Finally got in for an hour today, Christmas lights, Halloween decs, winterizing, honey do's, busy busy. But should have rest of floor out tomorrow. ,

I'm not to up on the plumbing in above pics and would like a sink, and a porta pot will do as a head. But curious about fixtures in the floor. Is the port bow fitting a head drain and the two starboard fittings a water supply for sink and head and the drain I know is for the sink. So some kind of 12V pump and I could rig up lake water to the sink?

What are rebuilders using for breathing protection when working with the fiberglass especially when sanding and grinding?

3M respirators (half face at minimum), tyvek suit, gloves taped to sleeves. shop vac with bag sucking up dust at tool.

Average resto is about $250 in PPE

Thanks Scott Danforth have done this a few times but a little to loose on the PPE, I need to do a better job of that.

Focus on the demo and take alot of pics/measures. After she is stripped and cleaned out for rehab then start dinking about those options. Lots of
things will be going as you demo and restructure. Those items are Wishlist/lipstick items. They will come into as you move along.

As I get more into this the next question is becoming the stringers. 1968 bellboy boat is it fiberglass over some plywood underneath, or straight fiberglass? 12” wood sticking out of the middle starboard stringer but looks almost like the floor at the front was replaced and it was easier for installer to throw a chunk of wood in instead of fiberglass. The stringers are hollow can I fill them with foam? The fiberglass is still strong and in excellent shape.

The hull and the majority of most boats are pure fiberglass. In your case it appears to have a foam stringer system. Typically that system requires more than the average 3 glass/epoxy coats up to 7. They are wider but if tight no wood is the nice part whereas no rot sooner than later. Wet foam is wet foam like rot wood is rot wood.
The question is... Do you feel lucky today? Why was the foam compromised in the first place. For all your hard work and expense it should probably all come out and start from scratch.
Wood stringer usually have 3 glass covers one being 2-3" past the other. The wood needs to be wetted out and let to cure then installed as stated.
Regardless of the application you use the critical part is in the proper method of installation with no short cuts.
A lot of jack asses try to put wood over a rotted deck thinking its ok now or to pass the problem onto the next buyer.

There is zero foam in the stringers. The two inside main stringers have a 1” diameter hole on the inside at the center. I can reach with wire both ways and zero obstruction. And to answer my own earlier question no plywood or any other wood inside. What I’m wondering is will I gain anything by filling them with foam since none was in before.

Well cleaned out most of the rest of the floor a little around the edge and get the remainder of the wood off the stringers and that part is done. I had hoped with fiberglass stringers there was a minute chance the transom would be ok but u can see in the second pic a black hole in the transom at the end of the inside stringer on the starboard side. So next trick will be cutting out the transom tomorrow. And I’d like to get the rest of the sanding done before I put the boat in my garage to do the fibreglassing. The other thing is no holes for water to get into the bilge. No wonder there was 15 gallons of water under the floor when I tore it off. Not sure who did the I/O to pod conversion but they did a shitty job. I bought the boat cheap, knowing it was a 98% chance it needed a transom and floor, so no surprise. I’m thinking I will remove the old I/O engine mounts and carry the center stringer all the way back to the transom with some holes for the transom drain hole to be used. Also need to get water from outside compartments to the inside for drainage so I guess some pvc pipe holes. The stringers re almost 1/2” thick fiberglass but the engine mounts are rotten wood covered with a fiberglass skin so soon to fail. So that’s why I want to get rid of them.

I have decided on 3/4' exterior plywood and polyester resin to do my floor. Will treat both side's of floor with resin and mat before installing, but what is best material to fill any voids in the plywood both sides before glassing? And glue to use to attach the floor to the stringers? With screws.
