I'm not a real big fan of pressure treated wood in a boat.... unless it was left to dry out a few months before glassing over it....What kind of resin was used to do the stringers and new deck??? Poly or epoxy ?

Stomping aroud the deck won't tell ya much....If you want to know if there is rot you need to do core samples....

Tri-Sodium Phosphate is excellent to scrub it down with. You can get it at Lowe's and follow the directions on the box. Look around after you have it power washed out and post up pics of any areas you think have a problem

I have used TSP before to clean walls, so I know of the stuff. I do not know for sure, but I think he used epoxy when glassing. From the sounds of it, the wood had been drying for a while before he installed it, though I do not know for how long.

He had replaced the transom, but never finished sealing the top of the transom, so the top edge was exposed to the weather, allowing moisture in from the edge in the middle. It is my hope that I may be able to somehow remove the damaged section, and rebuild the transom, rather than completely gutting the whole thing, but that will depend on what things look like once I wash it off good.

When I did the floor, stringers and transom, I used Epoxy that I believe was West Systems? The transom was was replaced. I ran out of fiberglass cloth to do the top edge of the transom and it was not glassed in. I got notice of my deployment while I had the top off of the hull. I was rushed to get the top back on and was deployed before I could seal it up. The top half of the hull was damaged in the motor mount area. Once the tarp fell apart, water was allowed to penetrate the transom during the six years it sat outside. The stringers were made out of treated lumber. The lumber I used was allowed to dry for about 3 to 6 months before I used it. Like he said, he will need to clean it out and see what he has. I am hoping that it will just be the area under the damaged top that is damaged. When I get a chance, I will post pictures of the hull with the top off and the floor removed. They are on my other computer.

Yes agree on the core samples,My bad..tapping is a good way,You have to have an ear for it though.But yes,To be sure drill a core sample.

Bummer,But hey you are in good hands here With all the expertise here,You will have that baby better as new and splashed before you know it! Dont wanna sound like a mom but be sure to get all the protective gear,Facemask,Overall,Gloves etc....

OK so if epoxy was used you Must go back to that..... Poly wont bond well to epoxy.... It's a bit more in cost.

Does anyone have an idea what a boat like this might weigh? I am trying to determine how "stout" I need the cradle and its caster wheels to be.

STOP!!!! I just briefly scanned through all the above mails. I noted a lack of of "numbers", "tags" etc...... I don't know what the laws are in your state but, get clear title/registration/docs on the boat AND trailer before you do what I did...... spend years and $ on a restoration and not be able to take it out of the garage!!! I finally, after about a year, got the boat and trailer titles and licensed but not after out of state trips, registering it states that don't have titles then transferring it to my state, resurrecting the dead, tracking down "level 4 number checkers" etc etc..... I would suggest getting ALL the paper in order BEFORE you start sinking time and money into it. I know in my state NM, smoe boats just cannot be brought back

This is a very valid concern, and to combat that, we are already in the process of getting the paperwork in order to get registration numbers with the state.

In the mean time, there is nothing wrong with planning.

Well, I got it pulled back out so she could get a good bath today. Didn't get a chance to bring home a pressure washer from work yet, so giving her a good clean scrub will have to wait for another day, but I can at least say the biggest bits of dirt are out of the boat.

The floor feels pretty solid, as I stand and walk on it. I have not noticed any soft spots, so maybe I am ok on that. I am guessing there isn't much you can really tell with photos, is there?

The transom will need to get repaired, but it looks like it may not need to be replaced, just repaired where water came in at the top. Again, I am seeking the advice of the experts on the boards.

I think everyone will agree, the only way to know for sure is to drill core samples. I like a 3/16" bit to test, just don't drill through the hull.

From your photos, I'd start with that dark wood where it looked like water would pool. If it's wet=rot, if it's dry=fill with 3M5200 and move on. Keep us updated!

I agree that doing core sampling is the best way to test, though I always get nervous drilling into something, if it is water tight now, it may not be once I drill.

I dont know about filling with 5200.Sound like a quick fix....
Furthermore rot travels.It might be good in one part but in time the molucules will travel and (dry rot) hence..
So you woud be filling dry wood that could be rotten..Not a smart idea..
If you are going to do it I say do it right and never worry about it again.It might even be less work to replace the whole transom than to "fix" a part of it.Removing just a piece of a transom is a real pain in the backside.

I would if I was restoring it...Not saying you cosuin didn't do a good job but it has been sitting and taking rain and snow over the years...

Maybe start at the transom and work forward...pull up the rear section and check stringers and deck to the first bulkhead...Did he foam the hull?

I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. He has never mentioned doing that, at least.
