Good Point wild, Gary is pighole. Yes if we did send those skilled people in jackson would surely be heard if every i was not dotted. So my alternative is send Jesse and Sharpton to Iraq to hammer out a constitution, bring home the troops, and execute the plan. But the time Jesse shuts up, NO will be prosperous again. I figure those tow dorks will run their mouths for 5 years.

I don't remember if they ever had an earthquake but if they do that place would be completely ruin. Have you ever been to N.O and see the city? very old buildings, I have never seen any city with more highway criss cross on top of one another, bridges everywhere. One good shake then it's all over. Yes it's historical but it's a doggone nightmare.
Be careful..we are in Tornado alley. and haven't been in the news for a while. ;)

And the real east west interstate goes straight across above NO. It only goes to NO because of the old LA politics and if you are headed east or west you would by pass it totally on IH 12 which is what IH 10 was really supposed to be anyway.

With proper engineering and construction, N.O. could be completely rebuilt. I'm all for it. I've been there, how can we not?

I have mixed emotions, on this one. I lived there too, so I speak with some authority.

1. Building below sea level is NOT a great idea.

2. Pumps that rely on the "power grid" is also, not another great idea.

3. Building levees, for what nature will ulitimately reclaim, another bad idea.

4. The city is a cesspool, now, and before the storm. The looting proves that.

So, we're left with what to do?

I don't know ( at least I'll admit it), but I DO KNOW we're all going to pay for it.

DJ, you bring up some good points. I really don't know the solution either but I would hate to see N.O. abandoned. Heck, Venice is sinking too but you don't see Italy giving up on it. That city is unique unto itself, rich in historical and cultural significance. Same with N.O., I believe. I agree that there's about a billion problems that go into rebuilding the city and keeping it dry but I believe it's worth a shot. Just my opinion, of course.

I had the displeasue of visiting New Orleans... "cesspool" is a fair assesment...

Some of it was actually very nice, once I was able to get over the smell of urine and garbage.....

Erik,

Venice is another story, altogether.

Europeans have NO land to move into. WWII proved that.

We all want our waterfront property to be free of peril. It ain't going to happen.

The cost will be no where near the return. Knock out the levee, leave whatever part of IH 10 is above water and folks build on the dry area. It can be a small mosquito infested resort.

All business and oil needs can easily be met in Baton Rouge or Lake Charles.

My second reason is how easy a target for terrorist.

If Louisiana was your home state and New Orleans was your home town maybe y'all would'nt be so darn judgemental and so ready to erase the place from the map. How about taking in one of the destitute families into your homes until they can get back on their feet some?

I dont know what to do with it either. For the historical aspect, I would hate to abandon it. For the $$ to return aspect I think it would be crazy to rebuild somehting that will eventually flood again.

Venice is a totally different situation to New Orleans. It began sinking slowly over a few centuries. It was never devastated like New Orleans is.

Louisiana "politics" have allot to do with the disaster.

Many things, for peoples safety, could have been done, but were not. Casino's caught the eye of politicians.

Okay, okay, that was a poor comparison but I still strongly believe that we should try and save N.O. nonetheless. Call me sentimental, whatever.

As an economic/historic center-YES, you have my vote.

As a bastion of depravity and elicit crime, you lose my vote.

Look at it this way, DJ. N.O. as we know it is pretty much destroyed. Maybe we can save and restore the Quarter and the other historical areas and homes. Rebuild the rest of the city according to modern standards and you're looking at a better area than it was before.

And you know what it will make me feel better for doing it than they will feel for me having taken them. It is nice to feel like you helped someone even if only a little.
