new engine break in on test stand

Hello, I have finished my engine rebuild and want to run it on a test stand before reinstalling it. My question is can I just attach my garden hose to the water inlet hose at the circulating pump? I have run lots of car engines on a stand, but that was with a closed cooling system and a radiator. I would like to break in the cam and set timing, check for leaks,etc... before its back in the boat. I can make a hose adapter, that is easy. Just wondering if this would supply enough water to keep it properly cooled as it runs @20-25 minutes at a fast idle. Has anyone done this? I seem to think that it should work, as the garden hose has plenty of volume and pressure.

Hook the hose to the thermostat housing where the water from your raw water pump hookes up (assuming you have an alpha style drive with the pump in the drive).
Can't give any specifics, have no clue what engine you have.
I never put an engine back on the boat without running it on the floor first.

You can just see where you want to hook your hose to in the picture from your other thread.

Ayuh,... That'll break-in the cam, but the motor/ rings won't start to break-in til there's a load on it...

Just hook up yer hose to where the water line from the drive normally goes...

Ok, a little more than an idle, @1800-2000 for 25 minutes. And I know the engine won't really break in until its in the boat and run under a load, but testing it outside the boat first just makes sense as I do not have easy access to lifting equipment to pull the motor again should something not be right. And also it will be completely "dressed" including the alternator and pump drive belt. It's nearly ready to go now, just have to put the carb on it and hook up a battery and fuel tank. I just need the time to get outside, thanks for the input and I will post pictures when it's done.
