For y'all who use big engines, how useful is power tilt and trim? On the smaller engines I've found its OK butnot essential. I found a 1978 Johnson for about $650 without power tilt....

I suppose that depends... if you are going into shallow areas frequently... then I would say it would be a pain to constantly having to lift it or manually adjust the pin. For me... I have it on my 90... but only use it for trailering to lift it high enough for the transom saver.

Some boats need to have the engine trimmed down to plane quickly and trimmed up to achieve a higher speed and more efficient crusing... so ya, I think it depends.

For my Jup... and my conditions for the most part I can get away without it --- especially with the tank in the front.

My 1.8 cdn cents for ya Chief!! :)

Have tilt only on the Mariner, trim would be great to fine tune when running but Im happy as it is.

We are always beaching, exploring and tucking in on the small lakes around here. Also float the channels that connect lakes. Real skinny water sometimes. The tilt feature is awesome. Wouldn't want a boat with out it.

It's also very nice for getting the motor up for launch, load and trailering. My backs not getting any younger. Now that I have it, I personally wouldn't have a motor without power tilt at least.

Re: New CC, take 2

Thanks for the advice guys! After talking with the shop owner who is selling it, I decided on a 1986 Evinrude 140hp with power tilt/trim. The shop put new plugs/water impeller/oil/ and carb rebuild on it and it comes with a 100% we fix it free warranty through mid May. Best part of all though, I am blessed with a SUPER AMAZING Admiral! Just gotta shout it out cause she's so awesome! We were talking about the various engines I've been looking at and their pros and cons. She then suggested we buy this one- the most expensive of the bunch! Sa-weeeeeeet! Perhaps she knows how me and engines get along...

That's good news. Having had one with and one without, I would not be without power TnT in the future. It's just too useful and handy.

Great stuff man... that'll be a great engine for that boat! Nice find and it really is great to have a super Admiral around!

Looking forward to seeing some pics of it hanging off the back of the CC!

Re: New CC, take 2

Thanks guys! Its a bit more then I wanted to spend at $2200 out the door with controls, but I figured any engine I bought would be taken to a shop and have the carbs and impeller changed anyways, and gone through. I'm just all thumbs with engines and hate having them quite on me out in the lake. So add a few hundred to whatever one I bought off CL... this is not too bad a bargin. Plus a warrenty is nice to know even if I likely wont need it. Plus, everything I was finding sub $1500 was late 70's and it sounds like there were some major improvements in engines between the 70's and mid 80's. At least those were the arguments I used

An '86 140 w/ T&T and a warranty is a BIG improvement over an early 70's electric shift w/out T&T

A pair of oars beats any electric shift with or without TnT. LOL

Sounds like a great find find, Chief. Might be a little more $ but with the shop standing behind it, maybe priceless. Will you be able get on the water before mid-May?

I think an '86 may be prop-rated horsepower too which is nice bonus. Should be stronger than a little earlier 140.

For small motors you can go way back and they're still reliable. 60's big motors are more temperamental and parts support is not nearly as good. Here's a small example, my '81 Evinrude I think is the first year they used the primer as opposed to the choke. Cold starts are WAY WAY faster than my '73 Johnson was. I don't know much about the oil injection systems and their reliability. I would hang that 140 on your boat without even thinking about it. My 18' is rated for 150. Go figure.

idk but i have a 65 merc 650 and it starts rght up everytime first outboard ive had ... Havent had to replace anything on it yet but havent had it that long well c how she does this year ??i know it sat for a yr wen i got it i cleaned carbs, waterpump, blew some sand outta the waterline and bammmm she fired rght up... I have found some sites for parts vintagemercs.com being one of them just my .2 cents everyone says there good motors so ????

Re: New CC, take 2

Another question I've been pondering now that I decided on a main engine is if I want a backup. The MC came with a nice Jack plate and a small motor can be had for cheap. I have a 55# electric troller but I doubt that would push this boat very well should the main engine quit. Hopefully that won't happen... Now one of the uses I plan for this boat is tubing. Has anyone tried towing with a Jack plate on? I'm wondering if the lines would get caught up on it or the kicker on it. I can use the electric without the plate, but for a gas engine I would need it. Anyone tow with a plate on their boat?

All of my mercs have been this way so far, quick and easy to start, but my 650 is the first one that had any actual power, other two = 200 (20hp), and a 110 (9.8hp).

but I have seen several mercs at the lake, both blue and red band that have been hard starters, but I suspect that's due to owners and the engines needing a little work.

Heck even my 9.8 was sold to me cheap due to it being a hard starter, and a short runner.
All it needed was a little tuneup :)

Tube and tow skiers, The kickers wood shim,(high tech) is placed flat and lowers the motor slightly. The yoke and strap do drag on the kicker at times, the other end is fed through the ladder.

Is the jack plate extended out, and how far? I have seen them as much as 10".

One thing I am considering is a second set of eye attachments just outside the main motor, This would eliminate kicker and ladder interference. I'll end up with a shorter yoke and strap for tubing.

It sticks out about 4-5", this is it on the MC which is only slightly wider then the SC. If I put the eyes outside of the kicker bracket, the rope will get caught up on the engine. What about putting them inside of the kicker, just outside of the main engine like 64 suggested? Would that still handle the force of towing the same?

What are yalls thoughts on a kicker in general? I won't be trolling, it would strictly be a backup.. should I stay with the electric or bolt the plate on and put a gas kicker on?

I run a kicker. Good peace of mind especially if you boat frequently on weekdays or other times when there aren't too many other boaters around. An electric isn't likely to get you home more than a couple miles.
