Re: neighbor ruined my laptop.... what to do...

So, by your reasoning, if someone wrecks my car, I should demand their insurance company give me what I originally paid for the car and not what the current market value is? I think I'm going to go out and try to get into an accident so I can get 25K for my ten year old minivan. Thank you for the encouragement.

In Jason's mind, this is how the world works....lol

The problem is Jason is taking no responsibility for his actions. He feels entitled to a new computer because he voluntarily used his "tool" at his neighbors house.... which is 100% wrong.

This guy doesn't deserve a new computer for free... he's taking advantage of the situation and a 67 year old man.

Honestly, I'm not sure how people like this sleep at night.

1. If it is supposedly water tight and ATF got in it there is a problem. It was not water tight. If you had a warranty check it. I would also go a little easy on the neighbor. If the ATF did destroy parts of the computer then the computer was not the water tight box is was supposed to be.

2. Take everyone's comments about backup to heart. All your data on a work laptop you take to the shop/garage/etc. without a backup is a time bomb. Keep your data on another computer in your office, then treat your laptop as a backup. Doesn't hurt to have a copy on a 3rd drive somewhere locked away.

In the end it really doesn't matter what any of us thinks. This is a situation between him and his neighbor. As long as the situation has an ending that is satisfactory to both parties, then so be it. Remember, opinions are like elbows.

Jason,

Glad things worked out for you. I just wanted to add that you might want to look into some type of insurance for the laptop. Maybe talk to your insurance agent to find out if the laptop and be added as a specific item on home or business insurance.

Could come in handy if its ever stolen, dropped, hacked, etc.

Regards,

Mark

If your good with tools just fix what needs to be replaced. You can get keyboards off Ebay for 15 bucks and monitors screens are anywhere from $50 to $200 depending on screen size. Then google "replacing a laptop screen" and find one that shows you how... do the same for the keyboard.

Yup you hit the nail on the head, squarely...unfortunately, he made a choice to bring the rest of us into it, so we had opinions...

"You got questions, we got answers"

But they worked it out and a good deal is always defined as if your happy and the other party is happy, then you made a good deal.

I agree with this statement also.

Personally, I probably would have done things a bit differently. If I had actually lent the laptop to the guy, I wasn't there and then ATF got on it it would be one thing but the fact that I brought it over makes it a whole different story. It is my responsibility to put the laptop in an area without peril.

In the end, the OP and the neighbor that worked things out and all is now good in the universe.

Re: neighbor ruined my laptop.... what to do...

WOW, you guys have some strong opinions on this thread!!.

The bottom line is that it was a bad situation that was not intentional. There is no good solution to this, someone is out $1500. I'd guess your neighbor gets enough free repairs that it helps offset the loss, or at least he will in the future, right ;).

I would guess that there are some standard laptop parts in that custom laptop. You can order replacement LCD displays for most any laptop. So your neighbor gets professional boat repair help, your old laptop (after a couple hundred in repairs) and by far the most important thing here is having a good relationship with your awesome neighbor. I've had bad neighbors, and there is nothing worse. I have awesome neighbors right now and there is nothing better.

My neighbor fell off of his roof a month ago and broke his leg. When it started snowing, now myself and 2 other neighbors pitch in and keep his driveway clear so he won't have to get a plow contract (he is out of work right now). He never asked for any help. This just makes my point about the value of good neighbors.

Re: neighbor ruined my laptop.... what to do...

I am surprised at you guys who think I should get some kind of depreciated value on this. If it happened to any of you, you would all want a new one. This isn't a car where I can just replace a fender if it gets dented.

I have been in business for over 17 yrs & all I can say is if your neighbor had not just decided to buy you a new one if you had taken it to small claims it would have been depreciated severely custom or not just like any laptop would have been.

Also sorry but you are taking advantage of your neighbor at Christmas no less by letting him pay 100% for a new one. Also since it doesn't depreciate you should be taxed by the government based on full value every year are you?

I assume you will be turning over the old one to him though at least?

Sorry to tell you everything DEPRECIATES & you have taken advantage of an accident that by your on description wasn't even really foreseeable.

Last point I would never expect a neighbor or friend to replace a 3 yr old laptop with a new one custom or boxed it just isn't right IMO.

If you really just wanted people to agree with you you shouldn't have asked on a Forum Board but I am very pleased at how the majority feel about this.

Ps.
I'm not necessarily "entitled" to a brand new one, I know that. But I am very entitled for a full repair of mine.

You are not entitled to a full repair if the repair exceeds the Depreciated Value.

Take it over to Jasons he would gladly buy you a Brand New One if it is damaged in his presence & remotely looks like he had anything to do with it.

Eh, if you ran over it, I wouldn't try to beat you outta your pension. I figure a pizza and case of beer would cover my loss.:D

I have told quite a few people about this thread & they all can't believe Jason did this to a neighbor/friend.

I also can't believe he takes no responsibility for this accident. I know I would never want him on my property or boat since he feels so entitled.

Your neighbor came and asked you to help him with his pump. No where in your original post does it say he asked you to bring your laptop and use it to help him with his pump. You took it upon your self to take your laptop and help him with his pump. You, Jason, should assume some resposibility for this accident since you took your laptop by your own accord. Your neighbor didnt ask you to bring it. Some responsibility lies with you.

The other fact of the matter is. Regardless if he buys me a new one or not. He is 100% responsible for getting mine repaired.

Re: neighbor ruined my laptop.... what to do...

I disagree that Jason upgraded at his neighbor's expense. First and foremost, he obviously uses this laptop as a work. If anyone paid attention he uses this as a work lap top that he is responisble for and although he was helping his neighbor out he still brought his "tool" over to help him with the work he was asked to do. Honestly, I feel that he should be repaid with a compariable lap top by his neighbor and thats it. I think that most of you tools on here would be singing a completely different song if this happened to you or if you actually valued the work you do.

Hard to believe that you'd waste time registering for these forums and then make this your first post....:confused:

You shouldnt use a lap top like it was a repair manual. Ever notice how repair manuals get dirty when you use them? Best to make a copy of the pictures/info you need and then take it to the work area. Maybe his home owners insurance will pay for it but maybe not....Like others said you shouldnt ask for more than half of what it will cost to to place it with A USED ONE.. a coupler hundred at the most..sorry

^^^^ This guy has, on occasion, posted something that has left me scratching my head...or shaking it. ;)
But after this brilliant, concise, and accurate summation, from now on, even if he is wrong, I'm agreeing with him!!!:D

If this somehow went to court it would get laughed out of the room, and the OP'd get ZIP.

Let's see, I've got this incredibly valuable, irreplaceable, and inadequately-backed-up laptop....what should I do?" I know...let's take it over to my neighbours garage ...just for giggles. Oooops...something spilled on it?...WHO DO I SUE?
Thank heaven for a good neighbour (who got taken advantage of and is paying for someone else's stupidity)

Any lawyers in here?...:D

For a first time poster !!. I think you have no dog in this.

Doesn't anybody believe in accidents any more and not looking for $$$.

What the heck happened about saying oops I'm sorry then laugh about it. :)
