I agree that boat is going to soak up water like a spunge! I bet that out of 10 gallons that make its way into the boat, only about a half of one gallon make it to the bilge to get pumped or drained out. Hope its got a pertty beefy trailer to hold all that water weight. Looks good though with the carpet but it will just slow down the water from evaporating. And help the wood rot even faster.

Re: Need help on replacing floor Please

I am no expert at boat repair, but I have had some ROTTEN experience.

To each his own as far as repair choices go, but, I can tell you from a bad experience that these guys are correct, so for anyone out there considering just covering the rot, it just is not a good idea.

About 8 years ago I covered a rotting floor with ply/carpet in the boat I have owned basically since it was new, all was great/looked great at first, but the boat kept getting heavier and heavier, the tremendous weight actually wore one set of tires out on the inside tread (severe cupping), the weight also caused the bunks to settle in their brackets and the keel ended rubbing on the trailer axle, and to top it all off, by sealing in the rot it just propagated and spread, every speck of wood in my boat was affected, even the new plywood I had used to cover the mess.

So yes it is a quick, economical at the time band aid, but it is no "Good Fix"

Just thought I would throw that out there if someone is in the decision making process of what to do with a rotten floor.

So now I was faced with a boat hull that had ZERO value on the market, and was actually beginning to be unsafe, it was like trying to get an oil tanker up on plane, I am fortunate that I never never took on a large wave over the transom, because after removing the water logged foam and wood I know the boat would have sunk to the bottom.

I am now in the process of trying to fix it right with the help of some good folks on this site.

Your boat does look good for now though.
If you sell it to someone, I feel you are obligated to tell them whats underneath, they may want to take the kids out too.

The carpet is the same 20 oz marine capets used in most boats it has a rubber backing so the water is going to have to get thru the thick rubber then the water seal, rot the new wood then reach the bottom floor which like i mentioned was in better condition then i first thought. It is fiberglased all over and again I only plan on using it for the summer I will be into it $1500.00 total when done (got some deals) reason for these pics when i sell it i plan on showing the build to the buyer they will know everything and I will only ask 1500.00 so a boat thats been gone thru with a great running 70 hp johnson for 1500.00 if they choose to replace the floor we still both win.

I will keep ya posted

Thanks Dom

And here it is after it's maiden voyage, It ran perfect and floats great did not take on a drop of water this is on the Famous California Delta yesterday I am very happer with the final results the 70 hp Johnson really pushes the boat well great hole shot and seems to just float across the water on pad must be that "air lift" hull design.

Man,
I have allot to learn about boat repairs..no doubt. I have EXACTLY the same boat as this guy (acquired it 3 weeks ago), but it appears my floors are in better shape (drier climate here). My problems are generally more cosmetic...the sun here is murder on fglass above the waterline.

my father did this on a little speed hull that he picked up!! ill tell you what, he ended up selling it because if he had more then 2 people he could not get it to plain. he also had a 75 horse. not saying anything is wrong just saying nothing is right!! i don't know too much about restores, that's why I'm procrastinating mine, but i do know just cause she died her hair and did her nails doesn't mean she don't got crabs.
