If you are looking at 48" to 55" get the 55".Bigger is better. I have never heard anyone say gee I wish I would have got a smaller tv, but I have heard I wish I would have gotten a bigger tv. Our first flat screen was a 47"and we said wow! Our next was a 55" and we said awesome! Now we have a 70" and it's like watching tv/movies in a theater. Most of the popular major brands are pretty similar. I doubt you'd be disappointed with any of them or see much difference in them or the picture quality. My personal opinion is that Samsung is the best quality tv. Generally cost a little more than other brands but worth it.

We are running a 46 in the living room and a 26 in the bedroom and they are both perfect for our viewing distance. We have a Vizio in the living room and I am to lazy to get up and check what the bedroom TV is. Running a 56 in Vizio sound bar on the living room TV with a separate subwoofer and it rumbles and you can hear it with no problems. I picked the TV up at Costco about 5 years ago and it has been a good one, it replaced a Plasma that was burning out and we have never looked back. One thing I did do, is I build a small adjustable wood frame when I was shopping that I could vary between 42 in and 56 in and we could adjust to see what different sizes looked and felt like at various positions in the room. That frame has been passed around to a few of my friends and it has helped them pick the right sizes for their viewing area.

"and I am to lazy to get up and check what the bedroom TV is."

I actually thought I'd cut out a couple different size rectangles, maybe for 50 & 55, from cardboard to see just what the size would look like from various places in the room.

Don't be afraid to go big, My 50" at 12' is as small as I would go, looking for a 65"+ for the next one. Not sure why someone would go small.
Exactly. getting a 70 for my room at 12' next.

You guys with big tvs at close distances may want to get back to us later when you have eye problems/seizures.......... Hope not.

I know it drives me nuts to have to sit near the front at the movie theatre, so no reason to think a too-big TV screen wouldn't do the same in the home theatre. :noidea:

It's not even close to like being in the front of a theater, and there's no concern about eyesight. In the store you stand three feet in front of the screen and try to determine what's best, at that range they all seem big and the blur can give you a headache, move back to 9'+ and the game changes, you can still be annoyed by slow refresh rates on some TV's, but the small defects/shortcomings in the picture can be much more difficult to see.

I remember when I was satisfied with a 13" black & white TV on rabbit ears, things have changed a bit folks.

I would think other way around. BTW, when you mother said don't sit close to TV, that was as valid as don't swim for an hour after eatimg.

Yeah, but my mother wouldn't let me sit too close to it. And I could never understand why I had to wait an hour to swim after eating, but my cousins only had to wait half an hour. We all survived.

Multi-Quote is working like squat. maybe because the posts are on different pages, idk.

Anyway, who knows what the early tvs were putting out. I would think the brightness would have some affect being in close proximity......

One would think. My bro has a 55+ in a small room. I don't care for it. Seems like your eyes move around to see everything on the screen if sitting close.

Know a bud, relative, neighbor with a large screen? Check one out in a home setting if you can....

TV's don't emit that much light, at least as far as actually being bright enough to cause vision problems, just going outside is far brighter.

I'm not talking about vision damage, I'm referring to temporary eyestrain that I get when I have to scan back and forth to take in the whole image. Gives me a headache after a while.
