Re: Nascar Chicago - Chase Race 1 and Breaking News

Well, I'm older than nascar. And I don't like the Chase. Or the manipulations of the management lately - prior to Richmond. Pre-Chase was based on consistent performance. If you had good finishes, chances are you would be in the running at the end of the season. Now, in the Chase format, about 70% of the season is devoted to get into the 30% of the season to determine a champion. And 23% of the drivers get into the Chase and 77% become the also-rans. I think their ratios are way off and the purity of competition is compromised.

And what happened to the "Stock Car" part of nascar? And the season starting in February and finishing in November is just too long and overlapping other sports is one of the main reasons for losing viewers. And from what I've read about the new TV packages, some of the races will be available only on non-basic cable channels, like FS1 and NBCSC - a big mistake. I stop ranting now.

The Chase format is the reason for this entire dust-up.

Another thing I dislike about nascar is their short memory. When referring to past champions or race winners, they are always Sprint Cup winners. Petty and Earnhardt Sr. never won a single Sprint Cup. I know that tobacco is banned from advertising on TV, but facts are facts. Winston was the primary sponsor for 30 years and paid quite handsomely for the privilege as well as help make nascar what it is today business-wise. Guess I wasn't finished ranting. :watermelon:

Wim,

I am also 51, when I watched Richard slam into the scoring stand I was 11 years old, my mother was a BIG nascar fan way back when, it is amazing how much life I have lived since that day.

Just to add, I remember the days when they call Dale Sr. and others "Twerp" Dale was a nasty ***** driver and he was mean! So was Richard, and a host of others, if you wanted to watch a great race, look for some of the archive footage of Jr. Johnson's races! Those were mean races.

LOL

Well, lets make that 4 of us. (51.5)

I liked it when you could watch an Olds race against a Mercury, and the cars had bumpers.

There are some days that I really like the Chase and some days I really hate it! Have been a casual observer of NASCAR since Petty was driving a Pontiac, and my level of interest just grew from there. Got to meet King Richard a few times at Pontiac events and that is what began to spark interest.

I like the fact that the chase removes the "regular" season advantage, but I hate that this specific situation happens(this is not the first time), that is why I wanted NASCAR to come down hard on those that manipulated the system, make it so that no one, no team ever considers doing it again, EVER.

And like I said I am a fan of Bowyers, heck I don't have a bad thing to say about Michael Waltrip, but the only way to make sure it never happens again is to make the penalty so dramatic that no team ever considers doing it, which is hard because lets face it NASCAR was built on the premise of breaking the law, Moonshining, so its no surprise that this type of stuff still happens today. The part that may make the biggest impact is of course what the sponsors do, we shall see.

your only as old as you feel GA, you sound like a pretty young guy to me.

Some of you young whippersnappers keep me on my toes. :D

I'm still trying to figure out how Bowyer received any hit at all. The 50 point docking was pre-Chase, he had no wins, so he still starts the Chase with 2000 points. He went from 3rd in points to 7th pre-Chase with penalty after the final race at Richmond and ended up with the seed points exactly where he would have been anyway. And he is the one that started the mess.

If Newman or Gordon win the Chase, will the record book have an asterisk beside their name?

Yeah Bowyer pretty much got off with out a mark for having been the single biggest part in this whole deal, except maybe the higher ups at MWR but who knows....

And that's our job to keep you on your feet buddy!

Re: Nascar Chicago - Chase Race 1 and Breaking News

Qualifying is in progress at Chicago for the first Chase race, With 16 cars so far, Edwards is currently on the pole.

In an unprecedented move, nascar has added Jeff Gordon as a third wild card due to Front Row and Penske making a deal to get Logano into the Chase. Both Front Row and Penske are on probation through the end of the year and no fines announced. Logano stays in the Chase. I think it was handled as fairly as they could and only Truex was dropped from the Chase.

The story: Gordon added to postseason picture

I have a feeling the nascar will be making some rule changes before next season starts.

A regular on a racing forum I'm part of posted this:

I've been floating this idea for some time, but it never gets any traction. Just make it a 36 race Chase, with all drivers competing in the series eligible. The driver that has the most points at the end of the 36 race Chase is the champion.

Let's be honest, EVERY sporting event at this level pushes the rules to their advantage. I defended Olympic Badminton teams (Taiwanese?) that were throwing matches to get a better seed in the final tournament. It was the fault of the rules (or lack thereof) that caused it. These guys are there to win. They are paid to find angles to help themselves. It is smart at times to take a Safety in the NFL. That is not "trying" to score. In fact it is the opposite ;)

You young guys have trouble staying in track, don't you? Shuttlecocks compare to gas pedals - How? Oh, it's using creative reading of the rulebook, isn't it. :faint2::eek::D

Are we all just bored waiting for football games or races ? I'm getting some chuckles in this thread.:joyous:
