Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

I just came up with a great way to fair stringers, ribs, transom knees in place and make a very smooth rounded corner. I first took epoxy and wood flour and mixed to a peanut butter. Then I used a CD to make the rounded corner. I bent it as much as I could so I get a small corner and use less epoxy.(I broke 2 in the process) Then I wanted to cover the knees with a coat of epoxy to seal them. I took the wet 3" chip brush and used it to smooth the corner to a silky smooth ready to glass corner. Now I just have to wait till tomorrow to lay a layer of csm on them.

Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

sorry im so late joining this one.....but ondarvrs got you going well.....

just a couple of thisngs i can see........in post 7 there is a glass bilge channel.....i would think that would be for a foamed in area......

but if you choose no foam.....do not enclose that section of the hull off.....the water must drain

is....glass the ribs to the tube.....if you do....the center section wont be able to drain......

also......before you glass in the ribs and the deck......take a stringline to the bottom of the hull.....make sure its straight......if your just using a trolling motor....its no biggie if your hooked....but if you want to plane.....it will be a major factor........

your tabbing of the transom looks good....and your approach looks good as well......as allready stated....a full hull wrap wont help.....no reason.....a dyi'er allways wants to make it stronger...and 1708 will do that but in most cases it is not nessary unless the hull is holed.

cheers

the itching only gets worse
it gets in your bed...other clothes....even transfers from towel to towel....

the best way is a tyvec suit and long sleeved shirts.and long underwear....this past winter i was in long johns and a tyvec so i would not get too hot grinding.......wear gloves.......just keep exposed skin to an absolute minimum......also read the safety sticky at the top of the forum....its really important as glass doesnt break down in the lungs....ever.

hope that helps
cheers

Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

I usually wear a long sleeved shirt, long nylon jogging pants, a dual filter respirator, and some goggles. If I am sanding, cleaning, or using epoxy I wear gloves. My dad was in the body shop business when all they wore was a dust mask. I do not want to be exposed to this stuff like they used to be. (BAD STUFF) I have realized it is going to take a lot longer than I thought to finish this boat. I will post some more pics of the boat in a little bit, I am going to grab a bite to eat first.

Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

Here is the work done this evening. I cleaned/sanded the bow area storage area floor. I have a piece of plywood cut and glasses in and ready to glass down over that area for the floor. It will be set in place tomorrow when the epoxy is set up and hard. I used some biaxial cloth to glass the transom knees in tonight and will have to do some grinding on the bubbles and follow up with some patching and fairing. I am thinking about starting on the outside of the hull painting when the front storage floor is complete. I do not want it to weigh a ton before I have to flip it over. I figure the fairing, sanding, prime, and paint will not take more than a week to finish up. I am still looking for a good epoxy paint for the hull exterior. It will not be stored in the water so an antifouling paint is not necessary. I will be doing a pale yellow and white. I have the compressor and gravity gun here to shoot it with. I may also go with the roll and tip method. Not sure yet. Decisions, decisions!!! :driving:

Should I foam this front area? If/or I do it, should I make a drain area???

With me wanting to paint the bottom of the hull next. I am guessing I sand it down, fair it, sand again, fair it, sand again, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, and then a final coat? Is this correct? What is a good paint to use for this, along with a good build up primer????

as far as the foam goes.......uscg says its gotta be ther for small pleasure craft under 20 feet........your choice if it goes in or not.

foaming that area wont be enough to keep it afloat if it gets swamped.....youll need to foam more than that.....

the rule of thumb is....duplicate or make better what was there.

it looks like that hull doesnt use foam for structure.......so its really your call.....but things over all look good

one step at a time my friend....your a little ways away from paint......

but theres some famous probucts out there like awlgrip or emmeron....however the latter needs to be sprayed, and if chipped.....you redo the whole boat.

there are good sandable primers out there....

search the forum......qc is doing an ol woddie.....i cant remember the thread name.... ......

clikc on to his name and use the find posts button....youll see his thread and read his post....it is very detailed about painting.......(im not a painter so im of limited help on that topic)

I was wanting to paint the bottom before I get all the weight in the hull. It will be easier to flip! Then I will flip back over and finish the inside!

Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

Well, I did decide to go without foam in this boat.

I now have the bow anchor storage floor glassed on both sides, I used PL to embed it to the hull. I then used epoxy/glass bubbles to fair it up. I will be sanding and putting some glass on it on Sunday. I have a little overnight hog roast to go to tomorrow evening.

I am wondering if I should put a hole in the bottom of the "rib" that supports the back of the bow floor. If I do I guess I will need to epoxy the heck out of the hole that I drill for water to drain back. I need the help of you experts on here to help me on this one for sure. If you see anything else I am messing up please holler at me!!!

Next up is the ribs and the floor. I will have to do some planning for that before I build it up. I also will have to address the bilge area.

Any place that may hold even a small amount of water needs to have some way for it drain out as completely as possible, so drill a hole.

I'm on it!!! I will do it tomorrow after the resin sets up. I am assuming I just drill a 1" hole in the rib and epoxy the hell out of it?? Anything else?

I was just out having a light refreshing drink when I came across something I never really thought about.

On the top of the lip on top, I will be mounting a deck.
Should I:

1. Mount the deck on the very top, and fair in the side and glass it on?
P9120028Medium-1.jpg

2. Put a 1x2 on the inside and lay the deck just even with the top of the lip?
P9120027Medium-1.jpg

4. Put the same 1x2 and deck on but drop it about 1 1/2"??

Put It 1 1/2 Inches Down That Way You Have The Rail To Catch Things Before They Roll Into The Water. And Will Be Easier To Pull The Boat Around. :d

Re: My mystery hull project!!! 14" Something??

Well It has been a while since my last update. I have had the time to do a few things. I did get the grinding done on the inside of the hull. I however did not get the sides cleaned up yet. I put a layer of thin biax on the front storage floor area. I did also do some sanding/fairing on the outside of the hull. I got the ribs cut and set in with PL. I will wait till Friday night till I fair the ribs in. Then they will get a few tabs of CSM and a layer of 1708. This thing is coming along very slow. I am now thinking about making it a No Motor Zone boat!!! We have a few nice NMZ areas in FL which are home to the best flats areas ever! It will have oar locks and a poling platform! I hope to get the floor cut and set in by the end of the month. Wish me luck!

Here is the slow progress!
