Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

Well I don't blame you Chris I have kind of been looking for a 140 to throw on the back of mine. I have thought since this is a full rebuild of having a new capacity plate made and upping it to 150 as they are alot more common and easier to find BUT I am kind of unsure of the legality of it. I honestly don't think my boat would be overpowered at 150 especially since I have now been through everything with a fine tooth comb.

Mine is rated for 150 but I probably wouldn't hang one on there. Why add the additional weight and complexity of a 6 cylinder for 10 more horses (I realize it probably also has way more torque but still...). A 140 4 cylinder would be ideal.

Just thought I would wander down here to the Starcraft basement to see how things were going on your project...

Motor put-back looks like it is going great! As always, your work and attention to detail are impeccable.

Look forward to continuing to watch your progress.

Sig, you may have a case of HP-itus! I bet that 115 will be plenty of juice for ya man!

Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

We were vacationing @ Hershey Park, PA this week so progress is light.

The baffle plate arrived while we were away...after unpacking the car, I was unpacking the 'Rude parts box! :bee:

Side-by-side, you can see the new-and-improved baffle has more "meat" near the weak points where I was getting the leak.

And a 1/2-can of gasket sealant & agagillion new Grade-5 bolts, the exhaust manifold is finally buttoned-up!

With the help of the cherry picker, patience and a splash of profanity, the powerhead is bolted on to the exhaust housing adapter

Hose routing for the new telltale

And with the help of the Admiral (the official "flywheel rotator"), the LU is attached and functioning properly:

New fuel lines and the air silencer installed:

And drumroll please....

compression is still good (slightly lower than before) but more even (129/129/133). We'll recheck after she's warmed-up.

Now, the Admiral is very skeptical that this engine will "start". I was going to postpone running it in the driveway until next weekend (it's our anniversary w/e) ...but that was before the Admiral's provocation

Oh there is absolutely no doubt that motor is a runner. Believe me I got the same skepticism from my dad. As thorough as you have been She will run. I look forward to seeing the video, I left you some OMC porn in my thread, hope you enjoyed vacation.

Thanks for your vote of confidence Sig!!! It was pretty funny, when I was testing compression, Jenn (Admiral) poked her head into the garage with a big grin on her face...thinking I couldn't get it to start. I had to convince her that the facts that the spark plugs were out & the gas tank was disconnected was intentional.

I have to admit, that OMC stuff made me blush a little :love_heart:

Well there is only one way to convince her otherwise, the sweet smell of burning two stroke oil. Though if those pics make you blush if you do that you may do it in your dipey as we say around the house. (In reference to my toddler peeing in his dipey). ;) Fire it up chris.

Sounds like it's time to make blue smoke, BF. She looks too good not to fire off. ;)

Thanks guys!

Finishing stretch on before final test fire:
  1. Hook-up the Tach, Voltmeter and Head Temp gauge/sender
  2. final throttle linkage tweaks (spark advance already done)
  3. Go get some fresh 93 octane!

Then the motor gets put-away until the SS is ready to hang it!

Fellas, Unless I have learned wrong I thought these engines work better on 87 octane. I'm not trying to highjack your thread Blue but just asking/checking since you put your gas choice out there.

There's a long running debate on octane levels. My understanding is that octane levels drops fairly quickly and I'm guessing that the hygroscopic nature of E10 gas doesn't help with that (Marine Stabil always goes into my fuel & a separator is always used...even when testing).

I'll check my FSM's to see what they recommend...however they were written in the good old MTBE days.

EDIT:
1975 FSM recommends the following fuel:
  • Research Octane number: 94 (leaded)
  • On Pump Octane number: 89 (leaded)

EDIT #2: A close friend of mine keeps tabs on the project...just so happens to work for a government agency that monitors underground fuel storage tanks...I'm sure he'll keep me honest here one way or the other

Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

once we've gotten past the old issue of soft valve seats/guides on pre-80s 4 strokes that like lead to lubricate/cushion, i don't think there is any downside to running excessive octane; just that you're arguably wasting $. i always buy permium for my outboards on the same theory BF mentions: that the octane degrades pretty quickly, so the 93 you bought last month is now like 87

actually, to take the thinking a step further, since the fuel companies put higher levels of Techron-esque stuff in premium, i tend to run it in all my bikes too to help dissolve carb varnish from sitting.

I have the exact same boat, same colors and all, mine has original yellow seats and cushions, brown rug, I have a 115 Evinrude with power tilt. I have not seen any signs of stress cracks that you see, but I will start searching more carefully now that I see where they are on yours. Where did you get the engine paint ? have you found a source for the original mustard yellow or off white ? Mine is very complete and original, has the original canvas cab and plastic zip in windows, runs great I can get very close to 40 mph, tows my kids around fine. I am thinking about selling since my family is getting older and we are not using it as much, always been garaged, what do you think it may be worth ?

stress cracks on mine are at the outer most rivets however many occur in the integrated chine.

I got my engine paint (BRP Gold) off of Amazon.com

Its difficult to say what yours is worth without pics (cough, cough). Unfortunately its always a buyer's market for old tin...In my opinion, even a boat in mint condition would be lucky to fetch more than $2500 here in the Northeast (are you in SC, Pennsylvania?).

Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

Here's what went down this morning...My ears are still ringing...EEYEAH!

Murphy dropped by around 2:38.

No water in the cylinders from what I can tell.

Powerhead is off again, the exhaust manifold is on my bench.

The outermost cover is warped...I'm not sure how I didn't notice this before...or I didn't want to notice?

The lower port-side cylinder head cover & motor mount bolts were all rusty when we brought her home...coincidence??

This will probably be a winter project.

Well the wife was wrong about it not starting up anyway. If it's not one thing, it's another. :(
