Hi Guys,

I bought a used Bayliner 175 (2004) that has a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II engine - I got around to changing the prop to a Solas Amita 4 which I bought from iBoats. I am very new to this but when I swapped the props - The new prop would not spin (at all) when tightened down. It seems to be too close to the lower unit housing. I realised after some searching that there was no thrust washer, but then when comparing against some online photos, it also seems the anode is missing! After looking at some exploded view diagrams of the assembly, I cannot tell if the shaft seals are installed or not. Can anyone confirm this for me based on the attached photo? Note: I have not removed anything except the prop that was on there.WhatsApp Image 2021-08-30 at 20.18.30.jpeg

Props need a thrust washer which slides on first then the prop

Look at the other prop and see if the thrust washer is stuck to it

There's nothing stuck to it I checked. I also noticed there's no anode? Is that normal?

This is interesting.
I'd like to follow.
I'm betting it's stuck to the old prop.
Mine is brass, (2003 Alpha1 Gen 2). It's exactly like the one that @alldodge linked.
It's easy to distinguish it from the black prop, but maybe yours hasn't been serviced in a while and has adhered itself to the prop.

Here is the backside of the old prop - no washer!
I ordered a replacement washer and was able to get the new prop on there. This is my first boat but now I understand the purpose of the washer.
It seams the washer doesnt sit flat against the bearing carrier and is stopped short of doing so by the taper on the shaft. This makes sense so that the prop has something to be tightened up against so that it doesnt rub against the bearing carrier and anode whilst rotating.

I cannot believe this was running before hand without a washer! My guess is the garage I took it too "lost" it when they were doing the maintenance on the lower drive and assumed I wouldnt notice.

Might say something to the garage and it may have been an honest mistake.

I just replaced my prop hub last year, and there was a new washer in the kit. Did you put a new prop hub on?

No, although I did take a washer from a prop hub kit I just bought - because I couldnt find the washer by itself. However, the new Prop is a Solas Amita 4 - it comes with everything except a washer, and luckily the washer from the kit worked for Amita 4 prop.
