Thanks Decker. I have gone back and reread parts of this thread, as well as the RAKA epoxy info. Along with you and Wood's comments, I am certain he is not seeing boats done in epoxy. I will continue on the path I started. Can't wait to get at this again. I am also excited to get caught up on what everyone has been doing since I was last one here.

Thanks guys.

Hey GT and Trooper, Sure have missed you guys.

GT, what have you been up to lately?

Trooper, I have been wondering how your move has gone too. How is your shop coming? Are you all settled in? Tell me about your place. Many projects to do?

I had to get the house settled in first for the boss. She works such long hard hours and rarely gets a day off, I needed this place to be relaxing for her when she gets home. My dreams came true in this home. I have a 3 1/2 car garage attached - that belongs to the boss although she allows me to park my vehicle in it. My part of the property is the yard and the genuine "boat house" which in Yankee terms is the detached garage (1 1/2 cars). I am so excited, I finally have that huge yard I use to see in Troopers pictures. LOVE IT. Every day I walk out my door into the yard or boat house I am in HEAVEN!

I have some projects to do but NUMBER ONE is the boat. Looking back I can't believe I got as much done as I did in an apartment parking lot. After the boat is done and I am putting some serious time on the water (rowing because who can afford gas), then I will work on some of the other projects: tear down and redo the sun room. This time I will add vapor barrier, and put appropriate floor tile down (not the stuff they put on shower walls). Replace rotted exterior surface of shed. Remove the wall paper from all 3 bedrooms and both bathrooms. Repaint the entire house because not every surface should be colored "New Penny". What were they thinking. Then sand down interior paint off exterior surfaces of sun room and apply exterior stain! Hey, if anyone runs out of projects at home I would love company!

Well, good to see you guys GT and Trooper. I hope to get caught up on your threads soon so I know what you have been doing in my absence. Stay tuned to some action real soon. We got rained on today but tomorrow the motor comes off as does the cap. YAH :eagerness:

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Thanks for checkiing in Sphelps, good to see you drop in. I am so excited about the boat I can't stand it. I have trouble getting to sleep at night because I am thinking about what I can do the next day. Thanks for support.

I was gonna stick cap behind the "boat house" on blocks, but the trailer is 1 1/2" too wide for the gate. So next thought was to hang it from the joist in the boat house. The boss does not think it will hold. So we are deciding which is better: raise it up and then it it on cinder blocks in the garage and allow room for the boat/trailer to push under it each night, or just sit it in the corner of the driveway and leave it there till we are ready to put it back on. The driveway seems safer and easier, but I am not sure how good it is for it to sit out in full sun.

I am also measuring today before I take the cap off. I will be looking for some drawings on what points to measure. I did not know I needed to measure the first time around, but figure I will do it right this time - especially since we are at the point of putting in the stringers and ribs. Sure would love to see that cap on it again someday. ha!ha! Well, hopefully more to report later.

Have a great day all!

What's your Guess-Ti-Mate on the weight of the cap?

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Wood, that is a good question but it is pretty heavy. We had 2 men on each side of just the front alone. The boss is correct, it would probably do damage to the garage structure. I been tossing ideas around and I think we are gonna go with building a cart similar to the one you did to move yours boat around the yard, and then build some support framing on it to account for the depth of the front. Then I should be able to get it into the back yard out of the way, out of sight and cover it until we are ready to work on that.

As far as measurements before removing the cap here is what I have in mind: Cutting the scrap piece I cut off the top of the transom (before installing it) and cut it so it will fit inside the boat and slide from back to front. I will take my first measurement across it at the transom, then every 12" moving toward the bow from there. That should give me the beam measurements.

After that I can measure off for the stringers. I also just took measurements from the bottom of the cap to each stringer. The front of this cap has the sunken area to step into and probably had bench type seats on each site at one time. So the measurements were from the bottom of that sunken area (sorry, don't know what to call it) to each stringer.

Are there any other measurements I need? After removing the cap I am going to strap the hull and insert some wood to hold the upper portion of each side in place.

Your thoughts? Do I have it all covered so far?
Thanks, AJ

If I had to put a number to it I would say 600 - 800 lbs. Maybe more.

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Well I have an update. Yesterday I worked more on making the sides that will attach to the frame with wheels where I will store the cap when it comes off (today) until we are ready for it again. I also took measurements and have photos of how and where I took them. Basically I put one end of the tape measure at the transom/hull joint on both sides of the boat and marked every foot as far as I could (which was 10') moving toward the bow. Beyond 10' is the front well part of the cap so I will get those measurements immediately after removing the cap. So here is the proof!

The first photo shows how I used a board to lay the measuring tape along the transom so I could get that measurement. The tape measure really did measure the full span, but in the photo I see it pulled away from the starboard side - it was measured correctly though.

Other measurements I took were from the bottom side of the front well (part of the cap) to the outer most, and center stringers. This will help when we need to reconstruct support pieces that were washed away in the rot.

Let me know if you guys can think of any other measurements I should take. Today I will be removing the cap and putting some 2x2's on the inside of the port and starboard hull walls, and further supporting the shape with straps around the hull.

Thanks Guys.

Great looking progress, AJ...
You'll be back at putting back in no time...
Don't recall reading whether or not you took measurements of where the cap meets the hull...?
Front to back and side to side...
Have a great weekend!:D

Use a Stringline and stretch it from the top of the inside of the hull side starboard to the inside port. Then measure down to the top of all the stringers. Do this @ about 16" intervals. You can use the screw hole for the cap to help hold the line. Measure the top of the inside of the cap @ 16" intervals fore to aft. Measure across @ the deck height @ 16" intervals fore to aft. And last but most important Measure your Big Toe!!!!

GT, nope I had not taken those measurements but now I have. Thanks.

Wood, Big toe is - well - not so big.

More progress today. If you recall I did NOT have any stringers left to measure so I was going from a whole different place. Got 4 of the 5 stringers measured and ready. Sunday or Monday I will do the final stringer and all the ribs then get them PB in and glassed in. The stand I built for the cap to sit on really is cool and even reminds me of a kids climbing item at a park. I was amazed at how much easier it is to remove the cap when you have a boat house that has an electric hoist and a 4x4, eye bolt and a come a long. I even have the perfect spot for it between the boat house and fence. I am getting excited to do some glassing again. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. :peep::)

I better start getting my fishing line replaced.

Nice work on the de-cap & the cap stand.

Have a productive weekend.

Awwww, You guys!:embarassed: You are all so so kind.

Sphelps, Thanks, I am so happy to have such a large lot and all the storage in all the garages and yard space. It sure does beat that parking lot and complaining neighbors. Actually, there was only 1 complaining neighbor which is totally amazing when you think about the 40 hours I spent grinding when I first started.

JB, I did return to MS to dog sit for some friends while they went on a cruise. Everyone was asking how the boat project was going. Of course at that time the only work I had done was to unpack it. I never realized how much easier it could be to do this in a "controlled environment". Heck I even find myself talking about the next boat. SHHH! Don't tell the boss yet!

Wood, Thanks. That means a lot. It is starting to make more sense in the ole brain. I am such a visual learner so sometimes it is hard to do things the first time around. I really do want to do more wood working. I swear that cap and stand remind me of the city parks and how they have old vehicles and such for kids to play on. haha

Decker, Thanks, hope you have a great weekend too. I spent Sat doing family things. Went to see Gma, then went to my sisters for a graduation party for a niece. Got to hold the baby, and got puked on. :puke: Funny how instead of getting grossed out, I think of that as a wonderful thing. Without babies (even those that puke on you) life would not be as fun and reviving.

Hope you all have/had a great weekend too. Hoping to get the last stringer cut as well as the ribs and maybe even start getting them glassed in.

QUESTION: what are your thoughts on staggering the ribs instead of taking it straight from one side to the other? Just wondering if it would add any more strength or stability? Probably just more work than is needed - right?

HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO YOU ALL!

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Staggered ribs? Mine aren't, those that get BBQ aren't :hungry:

Could you? Sure, I probably wouldn't. Besides, if you stagger the side to side bulkheads, you won't be able to have the plywood seams land on them, so you'll have to add bulkheads or doublers back at those locations, anyway.

Did it have bulkheads originally?
