That's good, I was hoping I had not scared you all off. I am happy to report the Closing on the house went well. Now we are just waiting on this couple to be able to move into their new place, then we can move. YAH!

Update on guy found dead. Apparently the police showed up to evict him and he asked them to let him get a few things. The next thing they heard was him hitting the ground. His sister said it just does not make sense as he had an application partially filled out and it appeared he was trying to get back on track. Such a shame that times are so tough for people.

Back to the boat, so I was preparing myself for drilling the holes in the transom and it started to rain. Not just a little rain, I mean a down pour. It is less today but still raining for 2nd day in a row. So I am just waiting. :rain: Stay tuned for more when it dries a bit.

Hello Gang,

Wow I sure have missed you all. I need to get on here and get up to date on all your work in your own threads. We finally got into the house in OH. The weather has been cold and snow so nothing has happened in the boat shed. I am eager to get out there and get busy, but first I need a new vehicle. I am purchasing a vehicle this week, but I would like to get an idea of what my boat and trailer probably weigh. I am looking at the Chev Equinox. Love the toys and the feeling of being in a **** pit ready to take off in it. Gas mileage is great with the 4 cyl, and slightly worse with the v6. I am wondering if I will be able to pull the boat with the 4 cyl or not. It is rated for 1500 lbs for the 4 cyl, and 3500 with the V6. Since I won't be pulling the boat as much as I will be driving around for family things, I was hoping to get away with the 4cyl. I tried getting the rig weighted at a certified scale, but they laughed cause it did not even register. Any guesses on what a 17 foot Caravell fish and ski weigh with a 1967, 68 or 69 65HP 4 cyl Mercury on it? The trailer is a 1980 something, darn I can't recall what it is off hand. It is the tilt roller type, and a 1980 but I will have to double check the name later if we can't come up with a close estimate. Thanks.

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Weight's gunna be close to 2000-2500 lbs. Get the V-6. I had a Big 4 Cylinder Nissan trying to pull a 16 foot bass boat with a 65hp and it did fine until...trying to pull it up big hills or a steep boat ramp!!!! If the lakes you go to have shallow ramps then you'd prolly be ok, but you don't always know what kind of ramps you'll run into. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

Oh yeah, Welcome back SNOWBIRD!!!!!

WOG's got ya covered about towing, but if you want to know you're gross boat, motor, trailer weight, see if a metal scrap/recycling yard will let you drive onto their scales during slow times.

If there's no one in line for the scale, mine will let me drive on, drop the trailer on the wheel jack, move the truck off the scale, and give me a weight slip that the state of WV accepts for any trailer I register.

In 1 day, I did 1 solo trailer, and a trailer w/ out & again w/ the boat. Super friendly folks & they'll sell me rough cut aluminum sheet scraps for any of the tinny's in my boatyard that need some patching or etc.... Transom plates in 3/16" come to mind too.....

Glad to see you back..
I would rather have more towing power than be under rated.. Transmissions are very expensive to replace now days..
You also need to consider how many people you will have in the vehicle and what gear you will have when the boat is being towed..
Just my .02 worth..:D

It brought a smile to my face to read your comments again guys. Thanks. I feel like you are my closest friends and we have been separated for a while now. Great to be back in the boat house with you all. Love the ideas on the scrap yard, etc. I might even have one right up the road a bit. I think you are right on Wood, I pulled it up here with the truck and a v6 and did fine except for the mountains in Kentucky. I can always use that vehicle if nothing else to pull the boat. Now I am just torn between the 4cyl at 22/32 and the v6 at 19/24. Most of my driving will be hwy to and from family things, and we do still have the truck for towing the boat. Ok, well I definitely have some thinking to do. Thanks so much guys. Thanks so much for jumping right back in where we left off. I can't wait to get started on the boat. If the weather gets a bit warmer, maybe next week I can get out there and unpack her and start. YAH

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Hello again gang, I think about you all often. I still need to catch up on your own projects but I have gotten a lot of emails saying you guys are busy. I am happy to report that we are done with buying the house and all moved in. I can't believe I have passed the 1 yr mark on this project. I started this thinking it would take a month - 2 tops.

Just so happens that we have a neighbor who's dad use to do fiberglass work out of Florida. His dad has since passed on but he is eager to help finish the boat. YAH.

Wood, how you been holding up in all those tornados? Been thinking and praying for you and yours there!

Well, looks like I am ready to get back at the boat and get it completed. Tomorrows agenda is build motor stand and get motor off (again) then remove cap and start the real work again. In the mean time I have been enjoying taking care of my 1.17 acres. We have a cherry three that has issues. Not sure if it is a fungus or something else, or more importantly how to get rid of the problem. I am posting some photos. If anyone knows anything or has any suggestions I am open to hearing them. I will post photos of the boat project as it gets going again. I am so excited.

Thanks, AJ

Here are a few more photos of the cherry tree. A good bit of the cherries get the same fungus look that the tree has. Any ideas on the best way to treat it? I don't want to loose this tree.

Thanks, Aj

Tornado's were all in OKC I live 100 miles east of there. We're fine. Have no clue about your tree. Glad to see you're ready to get started again on the boat.

Ohio, right?

Might find someone here that could help via email w/ similar pix to what you posted.

Potential Problems - Like many members of the Rose Family, Black Cherry is beset with pest problems (the most serious being tent caterpillars, borers, scales, and aphids), and also has some diseases (primarily leaf spot and trunk canker).

But this:

Looks like these swollen stems:

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Wood, Glad to hear you all were not near them.

I can't wait to get going on the boat. Going to get the motor and cap off today, and hopefully get more wood. I do have a question for you. The guy that has offered to help keeps telling me that I need csm. From what I have read: CSM is not needed when using EPOXY because epoxy has and gives the same strength that you get from csm. Is that correct? (http://forums.iboats.com/boat-restoration-building-hull-repair/epoxy-resin-csm-ok-458633.html) Just want to confirm this is true before I go acting like I know what I am talking about to this guy and making myself look otherwise. He is telling me that I will not have strength with the 2 types of cloth I have which are 10 oz cloth and 1700 biaxial with no mat. Would I be better off getting and using csm on the stringers or am I fine with what I have? I will get csm if I need it.

JB, thanks for the tree help and info. I got an email back from the previous owner that said it is a flowering crab apple tree and trugreen was treating it for Japanese Beatles. I have sent photos to the ODNR Division of Forestry and am waiting to hear what they say. My thought is that neither the previous owner or trugreen knew what type of tree it is and they treated for the wrong thing. My other half thought it was crab apple too but when we cut into one she had to admit it has a cherry seed. It also taste like a cherry, and the dogs love them. :D

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

No CSM! CSM is only required with Poly. Poly has no Binders in the mix but does have Styrene. Styrene breaks down the fibers in the CSM and this is what "Binds" the mix together into one Homogenous product. Epoxy HAS binders in its makeup and therefore does not require the CSM Fibers/Binders. The Cloth provides the necessary strength for the final product. What you have is what you need. If he disagrees ask him to provide written evidence of the fact. He won't be able to. You can use CSM with epoxy but...It provides NO additional strength to the mix and is in most experienced glasser's opinions a waste of material and resin.
But Hey, I'm just an

so what do I know!!!!:D

Re: My first boat restoration, I need some guidance - PLEASE HELP!

Thanks Wood. You are correct, he has nothing in writing. He was telling me that they saw many many boats come in that did not use the csm. That those boats without csm and with the constant vibrations would start showing bubbles. After the bubbles started appearing there would be water getting to the wood and so on.

My thought is that I trust you and your experiences a lot more than his at this point. On top of that I am thinking those boats were not done properly, and not with epoxy. I don't mean to say epoxy is the end all, but I doubt bubbles will appear at any point after this work is done - if it is done correctly. So, thanks for the confidence booster.

Ok so the neighbor is good with wood and I have learned a few tips. Nothing major but a it is good to learn. Still, I will continue with the boat as prethought and planned. Here is the motor stand. Much better than the one I previously made. Much STRONGER too. When the rain dies down we will pull the motor and then work on pulling the cap off the boat again. Stay tuned....

Glad to see you back at it..
Wood is totally correct about the csm.. Your friend is more than likely seeing boats that or made of poly and not epoxy..
Most of the manufactures use poly..
I agree with Wood, you should use what you have and don't look back..:D
