What I thought would be way cool is a retractable screen door for the cabin on my chief. Larson makes them for windows which would be more of the size one would need for a cabin door.

That is a sweet set up waterman. I'm looking for something I can lock and offers a little bit of security. Sometimes the Admiral and I go up the Milwaukee river to have lunch and a beverage, and I have to moor it at the public dock for a few hours. That screen would be great for doing an over night tho, or for when the biting flys are thick. Seems like they are every time I go!!

I'm NOT a tinner, but I AM a fairly decent woodworker/fabricator and it seems to me that fabbing up a secure screen door for an opening like that would be a fairly straight forward proposition. Course, having never done one, I could be totally Way off base with my supposition!!!!

Hi Wood, I got a line on one from JBcurt00. If that does not work out I may build one. I just don't want any more wood in the boat then I have too. I have been a Carpenter/ Construction manager for 32 years. If I do go that route, I will use composit decking material.

I have a Chieftain bulkhead door, frames but no glass. I'm on the east coast. PM me if interested. I'm not sure if it's the same size.

Theft, yeah security is always a concern the VHF radio, CD player, marine batteries, fishing gear and even props are the target of thieves where a boat is concerned. Not sure what the area is like but not too many hoodie wearing types hanging about in marinas, they stand out like a sore thumb. I would be more worried about them seeing the boat in the neighborhood and helping themselves.

Thanks chemwire, I read your whole thread. Sweet sweet chief you have there. Love the chief's as much as the islanders. And I really envy your cabin headroom. I'll let you know. Jeff

Re: "my 77 islander resto"

Thanks, OI. When it came time to put everything back together, I decided that the door wasn't gonna be in the plan because it opened into the cockpit. I only trailer right to the ramp and it's under a tarp the rest of the time. I don't think an aluminum door would stop the junkies from getting in there anyway.

Oh, BTW, that's a real nice combo you've got! I love those Islanders...what I have in headroom you make up for in voluminous cockpit space...definitely more of a purpose-built fishing rig. Cheers, and best of luck!

Re: "my 77 islander resto"

Hi guys, Happy spring to all. The weather is getting better and I'm able to get going on this project again. First up is the new decking. I have the Arucco plywood already. I need to order the epoxy for coating it. I will be ordering from US composites. Question is to do the deck of my islander from transom to cabin wall/ bulkhead and the new transom will two gallons be enough? I was going to order the "thin" epoxy so it soaks in real well. Anybody have an idea?

Second question: I'm going to fit the coated deck pieces, rivet them down and then use CSM and epoxy over the seams. I will then be covering deck with Nautolex vinyl flooring. Is filling and glassing the seams a good plan, or is glassing the seams overkill?

Third question: Medium or fast hardener. Most my work will be done in the garage at between 70 to 80 degree heat.

Hey OI - I think you should be all right with the 2 gallon package. I've never really kept close track though as I like to run at least 4 coats and seem to have multiple projects going at the same time. Glassing the seams is a great idea, but, know that glassing uses up a bunch more Epoxy so plan accordingly. I'd suggest the med. hardener for what you've got going on there. Have fun! :thumb:

OI - Check the iboats prices for resin and FG needs. They just added a bunch of new products and have a 5% discount special running right now. Look at the top of any forum page. A buck saved now is a bucks worth of gas later. :)

It looks like spring is almost here. Got a bit done on the islander today. Job 1 was to get rid of the rest of the raw, warped treated plywood floor.

Now it's on to pressure washing and gluvit. I was surprised at the amount of flotation foam this boat had. It was filled to the brim under the deck. I really dodged a bullet with that treated deck too. No damage to the stringers. The gorilla glue kept it from touching them. I'm going to get it all cleaned up this week and start adding foam under the new deck. After staring at her sitting in a snowbank in -18 temps this winter it sure felt good to get at it again.

You got all the good stuff. OI! Chine braces, fairly clean underneath, non-pour in foam and rat condo/cemetery. Well, all good stuff except the last thing. There must be a rodent Starmada division, they sure love our tinnies. :blue:

Keep up the good work while you have the weather break.:)
