add me to the welcome. and yes, injuring yourself gets at least some empathy around here. but be careful, those cast iron Chebby lumps are heavy and lower back injuries are the gift that keeps on giving, for a lifetime.

Ok guys, heres some of the interior shots before I took her apart. Floor was raw treated ply that PO had put down with gorilla glue and rivits. Was buckling everywhere. Most of the wiring was lamp cord cut and spliced with black tape. The entire deck was waterlogged to the point I think it was swelled to 1" thick.

This is the cabin. I think the vinyl is original The plastic grass carpet is not.

Everything in the boat is rough. It looked like a handy man special. The pictures make it look a lot nicer hen it is. So on to the total rehab. Any one know if all the Islanders came with the screen door to the cabin? Mine does not have it. could it have been removed by a Po?

Re: How do I join?

broad rule for old tin boat resto: ANYthing stupid could have been done by an IPO. it does look like your boat got an earlier "resto"....lots of stuff is not original, incl the steering wheel. lapstrake hull is the definite tipoff that it's an older boat. the good news is that you can add one if you want.....you got a big tabla rasa there.

in case you're not aware of it, what folks mean about the treated ply is that the copper solution they use to treat it generates galvanic corrosion when in contact with aluminum and an electrolyte (water, esp salt water) is added. VERY BAD, will eat holes in your boat.

Ya, as soon as he told me about the deck I made it job one to get it out. When I pulled it up I found no damage. It was only down for about 2 years. His Idea of putting it down with gorilla glue was a total fail also. None of it stuck to the aluminum. I think that helped because it sort of kept the treated ply from touching the stringers. It made a gorilla gasket.

Sounds like another good unintended use for Gorilla Glue - Gorilla Gasket. :) I'm guessing the drought brown grass carpet is gonna go to.

Yes GA, The drought grass will be history. It's behind the side boards in the boat too...glue they used is a real bear to get off. Believe it or not the 110 outlets were wired to the batterys. That's where the PO plugged in the electric downriggers. He had huge industrial plugs on the riggers, but the 110 outlets were wired up with lamp cord. Almost everything on the boat was wired with lamp cord. I'm guessing he picked up a 500ft spool at a flea market and decided not to waste it. It was like I said before, a handy man restoration. Thing is the paint did not turn out to bad. He must of farmed that out.
The boat was originaly that yellow/orange color starcraft used years ago. I found the orange vinyl in a few spots on the boat, and if you poke around inside the cabin you can see the factory over spray of the orange color. The year of the boat is kind of a mystery too. When I bought it the guy said it was a 1976. When I looked at the title it says 1977. Whenever I look up motor or outdrive parts the serial numbers seem to line up with 1977.

Re: How do I join?

is it possible that it's not lamp cord but low-voltage landscape lighting wire? i wired my cabin with that because it was the cheapest way to get a large quantity of 12 ga wire. oh well, save it and you've got lamp rewiring covered for the rest of your life....

A funny thing about glue for vinyl and carpet. If we want to get old glue off, dynamite seems like the best removal aid. But if we use glue for carpet and vinyl, it is a bear to get it to hold. Why is that?

Your PO must have hit a good sale on zip cord.

They outlawed all the good old glues, environmental hazards that they were.

Welcome to the tinsanity. Nice pair of boats ya have there. One thing in common with most rebuilds and mine included are the things we find from previous owners handiwork. I'm sure many had good intentions but lacked fundamental knowledge. With the internet and and forums like this a wealth of information is available to make these boats way better and safer than when originally built. Good luck with your project.

you said a mouthful there bro. the first tinnie i sort of restored (16' Lone Star) was done before i'd been here and done some reading. it's watertight but oh my do it look UGLY....i didn't know that you only needed to put coat-it on the INside, for example.

Could not agree with you more barato. The wealth of knowledge on this site unsurpassed. I have only been hanging around here for a little over a year, but in that time I have met some truly nice guys.

Does anyone in starcraftville have the screen door from an islander? I am looking for one.

Those things get beat on pretty well and are usually the first to be trashed. You'll have a real tough time finding one man. You may want to start thinking about building one instead, eh.
