Re: Motor year??

Something is not adding up to me. I also make that serial number as pre 1975 but I don't believe that they were using the term 3.0L back then??

idk what label he got it from but its also stamped on the right hand side of the motor.

Yes it seems confusing as officially mercruiser did not seem to call them 3.0's until around 1987 but before that the 181 I/L4 was called the 140 which really is a 3.0 but again not officially that I know of. Now I don't know if they put 3.0 stickers on the engines back then or not but if you do a google search for say a 1970,71,72,73 Mercruiser 3.0, you will see many post by reputable forum members here on iboats calling 1970-73 a 3.0l. Here are two for example, http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...ine-rebuild-swap-compatible-years-233514.html and http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...1970-mercruiser-120-a-237019.html#post1603980

Also if you look around at some parts list you'll seem the older 140 models called 3.0's as well.
Marine Carburetor Lookup Catalog for merCruiser, OMC and Volvo Penta - Flying Fish Carburetors

In the back of my mind, I guess I just always considered some of the older engine models like this one a 3.0 without putting a whole lot of thought into it to help keep it less confusing for me and that's why I came up with the info earlier.

Maybe someone else may know a little bit more about this without hijacking the whole thread.:)

The 3252209 cam off the upper unit of the out drive there is a 2770087 number that is stamped on the side of the block which i think i originally uploaded those photos in the first post on the thread but ill double check.

2770087 is the casting number it was used on 2.5/3.0L 110/120/140 Hp.

Re: Motor year??

on the left side of the pic thats the white filter in front of the motor that I'm wondering what it is if its neither fuel nor oil lol.View attachment 221424

To go back to your fuel filter and pump issue. Someone has added a fuel water separator and placed it in the bilge. Your engine didn't some with a separator, and the pump which is mounted on the side is a fuel pump which also contains a filter and bowl for water separation. I would suggest adding the newer type separator later after you get the boat running.

The link in post 24 has an exploided view of your carb and fuel pump assembly.

ok so just unhook the one in the bilge and use the pump on the side of the block if I'm following you correctly. next question is if it has one in the pump why add this one just curious.

Look at the current pump and see if it has a filter bowl on the bottom side. It could be it was replaced with one which did not have the filter bowl and then the new one would be needed. Other wise because the previous owner was having issues and tried what you see. I'm only guessing since some folks will do things that work and others which just don't work.

There isn't a bowl or anything that i can see but there is a threaded piece on the bottom which i would think this bowl goes.

Then the bowl is missing, need to replace the fuel pump anyway. Before you start buying parts do what Bondo mentioned above to see if there is an engine problem.

Re: Motor year??

I thought that the 70s and early 80s with the 2.5/3.0 came with the Carter type pumps with the fuel bowl and filter on top? It was a metal cap with a band clamp and screw on the top to tighten it down. There was a clear hose on the bottom that went to the base of the carb.

I agree with you Jeff, Fun Times was seeing the 1970 numbers and Bondo mentioned the 1987 to 88 year from what the OP stated about the boat. Upon looking at the pics from the OP it appeared to me to be more the 87 to 88 type and the new fuel pump design as I posted previously. Either way it shows a the filter on the bottom type pump installed now

Re: Motor year??

i bought a boat a few months ago I've been trying to get a serial number but can't seem to find one

As Bondo mentioned, the serial number tag should be on the block skirt above the starter, 1x2" metal tag riveted onto the engine. Though, I guess someone could have ripped it off... See pic I attached, metal S/N tag should be in the location of the yellow circles, but on the OTHER side of the block. (Yeah, that is confusing, having the pic's flipped/mirrored...)

I think Bondo is right as the engine looks to be the same vintage as the hull, late 80's. (45* offset exhaust riser, fuel filter on bottom of fuel pump, shift interrupt and shift cables located on top of valve cover, 5-bolt exhaust manifold, Hencho En Mexico...)

One thing I found curious in the pics is...

3.0l2.jpg

What's that stuff circled in red, looks like painted over JB Weld? (Possible cracked block that was "repaired" in the past?)

Re: Motor year??

Back to the year of your motor. Your rocker cover has the mounts for the shift linkage and the interrupter switch. As far as I know, they didn't move it there until the Alpha One in 1984.
I'm with Fun Times, that sticker in the center of the starboard side of the rocker cover looks like a serial number tag.

Re: Motor year??

My 120 had a sticker like that with serial number on the valve cover. If it has the gimbal housing on the transom it might have a serial number there too.

I have 2 different rocker covers with different serials so my question is will they both be the same model year or no?

Re: Motor year??

Where did you get 2 sets of valve covers? From the start of this thread you had a motor and no drive. Now you have a drive and 2 sets of valve covers. Don't take it the wrong way. We can get you going again but we need to know what you have.

Ayuh,... The 3.0l was virtually unchanged from the mid-60s, through 1990 or '91, when it got a 1 piece rear main seal,...
'n it's been virtually unchanged since,...
