Re: Motor year??

Where did you get 2 sets of valve covers? From the start of this thread you had a motor and no drive. Now you have a drive and 2 sets of valve covers. Don't take it the wrong way. We can get you going again but we need to know what you have.

They came with the boat when i bought it i also have 2 distributers and these little metal rods?.

Ayuh,... The 3.0l was virtually unchanged from the mid-60s, through 1990 or '91, when it got a 1 piece rear main seal,...

Re: Motor year??

I agree with Bondo, that the 3.0 engines will be very close, but there have been some changes over the years. If the engines look "identical" (manifold, ignition, wiring, acccessories, etc.) it really doesn't matter if they are the same year, since they are built the same. The oddities come in when crossing years due to differences in the accessories, but those can be swapped over. The biggie is going from a 2 piece rear main seal engine to a 1 piece rear main seal engine (or the other way around), since there are lots of changes there,,, as the whole package goes.

So I take it that this is an uncompleted project boat that you are trying to finish up? Do you have the Mercruiser manual for the engine/drive? That's pretty much going to be the "Bible" for finishing up the boat as you need to know how everything needs to be connected,,,, correctly.

You mention having a MC1 drive, can you post up some pics of that and the transom assembly? Also, is the drive installed on the boat yet? Going from MC1 to Alpha is where there were a lot of changes, but it could work if you have all the right parts.

Ayuh,.... Dan, in post #10, I linked to his outdrive thread,...

It appears to me, he has an '88 boat, with it's native transom assembly, with a MC-1 for it,...
The MC-1 I believe is Beat, so steppin' into an Alpha 1, 1.97:1 ratio, will get 'im back to original,...

The motor appears to be a 2 piece rear main block,...
The accessories are of a questionable vintage,...
Looks like a points distributor to me,....
Carb, 'n manifold,..?? I donno,...

Make sure you check alignment before installing the drive.

Re: Motor year??

Mine has the engine serial.number and transom number on the valve cover too. It's part of the engine spec. decal. Maybe one of those covers can give you some info. Take a pic of the spec decals and post them, someone should be able to help with that.

Re: Motor year??

My current boat has all the serial numbers on the flame arrestor cover but my old boat only had the engine serial on the valve cover label. I think they switch to listing them all at some point but the earlier ones didn't have that label with full serials.

Re: Motor year??

i tried too do what bondo had said by pouring a little gas down the carb to see if it starts but turns out my battery isn't strong enough to start it cause it started clicking after one turn of the motor and while i was out poking around i noticed that they ran from the fuel/water separator to the fuel pump then to the carb. o i ordered some fuel lines. does anyone have a battery they recommend??

Re: Motor year??

I run a truck shop so I use big group 31 batteries. I like them because they have the 3/8 studs. I can run terminal rings on my cables. Plus they're pretty heavy duty. If you have something like an interstate battery near, you can get what's called a "blem" battery. They're new batteries that had some kind of defect on the appearance and we're rejected for top line. I get truck batteries at $50-$60 with a $10 core. Usually $100+ for top line.

If your not wanting to spend a whole lot for a battery now that would be my recommendation. You can get blem batteries in any group and in auto or marie.
