1-sided MDO: medium density overlay---looks like plywood, but has 1 face covered w/ grocery paper bag looking paper, it's what lots of constuction zone & highway signs are made out of..

NOT the carp cheap knock down furniture is made of: MDF - medium density fiberboard

ACX: 1 good face (the A) exterior grade (the X) plywood

BCX if you can't find MDO or ACX

HD carries what they call Sand Ply...it comes in 15/32 and 23/32...some thinner kerf too if im not mistaken. The 23/32 which is about 3/4 runs about $38 a sheet. Water resistant glue ply with little void areas is what you want. I think its like 7 ply.

You might also check with a local Lumber Yard and see what they sell for Floor underlayment for bathrooms and tile floors. This is really good stuff as well. Usually uses Douglass Fir for the plys and 100% waterproof glue. Personally, I've had issues with the new SandePly delaminating and thin plys. I don't like it! Might just be me though!!! I like the MDO stuff too. Hard to find sometimes and bit more pricey but less than Marine Grade. It's really good stuff and very nice to work with.

I was in HD today, and they actually have two types, one is called Sandeply which is a cabinet grade, but it doesnt specify exterior waterproof. The other is called "Sanded BC exterior" with waterproof glue and one side sanded for exterior use if coated. It was 28 bucks for 15/32 and 34 for 23/32. It looks like it has only 4-5 ply so i was mistaken with the laminate. the other plywood in there is voided and warped sheathing....Im gonna give the "sanded bc" a shot, coated with epoxy, then painted...

Okay so it looks like I am going to have to remove the cap. Ive read that I am going to have to take measurements before doing so but what do I need to take measurements of? Also do I need to build something to hold the hull in place or will leaving it on the trailer be fine?

Looking at the stingers theres only one set and only 2 bulkheads before and aft of the fuel tank. The strings run from the bow of the boat to about where the steering wheel is. Should they run the full length of the hull or am I mistaken? Also should I keep the original design or add more stringers and bulkheads?

Measure from port to starboard at the deck height and the top of the hull sides on the inside. Mark the sides of the hull @ the Deck Height. If your trailer is a Bunk Style trailer you can prolly leave it on the trailer and add some additional supports. If it's a roller style then you'll need to either build supports on the trailer or take her off the tailer and build a cradle for her to sit on during the rebuild. I'd recommend putting her back exactly like she is now, only with better glassing. No need for additional Stringers or Bulkheads. Pics of the boat and how she sits on the trailer will help us to tell you what you need to keep her supported for the rebuild.

If you could fabricate some supports to attach to the trailer that would support the bow area as shown You could prolly leave her on the trailer. Using some nylon straps around her girth would keep the sides from spreading.

My stringers are made out of 2x6's is that normal? Ive seen everyone on here doing them with plywood.

Some are some are not. Either will work. Plywood has more structural Stability IMHO.

Re: Motor mount rot

When I measured my motor mounts before demo I used a straight edge across the beam of the boat and took measurements down to the tops front and back. this way you have a good idea of how high to build them.dont forget to allow for fiberglass and the gap between the hull and the mount.

that sucks, you're gonna have to tear into her a little further. you don't want to glass over wet wood. woodonglass is right...take lots of measurements and try to figure out how it was put together when you dig further. you'll want to replicate and improve where you can so this never happens again. you'll have to keep opening things up until you get to solid/dry wood.

save the sections of fiberglass that you cut out intact as much as possible. they are good for using later as reference points of height and size. you'll also need reference points for exactly where in the hull the motor mounts go with regard to position front/back. you're gonna have some grinding to do so by the time that's done all previous evidence of their position will be gone unless you have some reference points to know where the new ones go.

I was the same way, never having done a boat resto before but once your into it its pretty fun, like everyone stresses take more pics than you think you should and lots and lots of measurements every conceivable direction. Be careful when you cut sawzalls can pack a pretty good punch with the end of the blade, dont want you poking holes through the hull. Just take your time and be careful. Check my thread if you need reassurance! if I can do it so can you.

Im just a little nervous, I have never taken on a project this big before and I have never worked with fiberglass. So I am guessing the deck is the first to go, do I just take a skill saw and start cutting it up?

I have an '89 reinell 181 that i fully restored. i replaced the floor, stringers, and transom. I also put metal motor mounts in and they are dead on. let me know if you want some pictures of the reno and the measurements for the mounts. Was my first reno and I had very little fiberglass experience. Was not too expensive just a lot of work. email me for further contact.
