If it were me, I'd cut just in front of the motor mounts all the way back to the transom an replace it all...Stringers and Mounts. $300 bucks oughta do the trick.

sorry to repeat myself but this makes a big difference: is there glass between the motor mount and the actual stringer? or does the wood of the motor mount touch the wood of the stringer?

if those motor mounts are fully glassed without the wood of the mount touching the wood of the stringer this could be really simple.

Don't know but you will once you start the demo process. If the stringer is truly dry and not compromised then just re-do the MM's and call it good. take measurements of the existing Height of the MM's and duplicate as close as possible to ensure proper alignment of the motor and outdrive

Sorry I didnt mean to not answer your question but no the stringer is not glassed on the inside of the mount. Im almost convincing myself just to do the whole thing but I am not sure. I know everything forward of the bilge is solid but that doesnt mean the rot hasnt already set in there and its only a matter of time. The shavings in the transom while clean are still some what wet. Why couldn't the builders just do it right the first time from the factory?

that sucks, you're gonna have to tear into her a little further. you don't want to glass over wet wood. woodonglass is right...take lots of measurements and try to figure out how it was put together when you dig further. you'll want to replicate and improve where you can so this never happens again. you'll have to keep opening things up until you get to solid/dry wood.

save the sections of fiberglass that you cut out intact as much as possible. they are good for using later as reference points of height and size. you'll also need reference points for exactly where in the hull the motor mounts go with regard to position front/back. you're gonna have some grinding to do so by the time that's done all previous evidence of their position will be gone unless you have some reference points to know where the new ones go.

Im just a little nervous, I have never taken on a project this big before and I have never worked with fiberglass. So I am guessing the deck is the first to go, do I just take a skill saw and start cutting it up?

Most of the guys on here have never done a boat restoration until now. By the time you're done, you'll be a Pro and know every aspect of the process and be darn good at all of em.

Well after removing the carpet I notice some of the deck coming up so I am just going to go all in.

Well after removing the carpet I notice some of the deck coming up so I am just going to go all in.

that's the next step...decide the scope of the project based on the condition of what's left. based on the pic posted earlier showing no glass on the underside of the floor i think this quote is the confirmation you needed to decide to go for it all. doesn't make sense to do much work with a floor that's deteriorating.

again, i have to agree with woodonglass. few of the rebuilders around here do this repeatedly. they're outnumbered by people who have discovered their boat is falling apart. it happens with more old boats than there are old boats that don't need it.

fiberglassing has a bit of a learning curve but the real reason these boats don't survive longer is simply the builders cut some corners. when it's your boat you won't do that. you can do it.

So I'm starting to cut the deck are there any tools you would recommend besides a skill saw that help make the job easier? Do I need a crow bar or something to pry the plywood off the foam?

Heres some day 1 destruction so far. Someone had redone the deck and was nailed into the stringers. The foam seems new and not even wet.

Core sample the stringers and bulkheads and see what you get. I agree the foam LOOKS good but if it's wet it will be at the bottom. Core sample it and see what's at the bottome.

It's impssible to give an exact "Quote" of everything you'll need but this list will get you "Started" and from there, after you've done some "Glassin" you should have a good idea of what you'll need to "Finish-UP"

Here's my take on the Starting List for a boat of your size.



PPE

Respirator (Full Face Preferred $100) if not then double filtered 1/2 face and Goggles with vents taped over.
Latex Gloves (1 – 2 Box(s))
Leather Gloves 1 Pair
Full cover Hooded Tyvek suit. (Rubber Band or Tape the Wrists and Ankles, wet Towel around your neck)
Talcum Powder (coat yourself TOTALLY with talcum powder prior to every grinding Session. This really helps seal your skins pores and keep the "Itch" off.)

Demo Equipment

Prybars, Hammers, chisels, Putty Knives
Flat tipped shovel to remove foam, Old Carpenters Saw (The Old Fox Hole Army Surplus Shovels work well)
Circular Saw
Sawzall
Dremel Tool
Router
Drill
Random Orbit Sander
Rasps, Files
4 1/2" Grinder with Backup Pad and 3 dozen 24 grit resin coated sanding discs
Masking Tape
Shop Vac for dust control or Dust Collector if you're fortunate enough to have one. It's good to create a Plastic Tent over the boat to contain the dust. There WILL be a LOT of it....A LOT!!!!

Glassing and Wood Products

3-4 sheets 3/4" Arauco Ext. Grade Plywood
(Possibly some ?” and ?” for side panels and seat bases when and where needed”

15 -20 Gallons 435 Polyester Resin
4 Gals Cabosil
1 lbs 1/4" chopped strand fibers
25 yds 1.5 oz CSM
15 yds 1708 Biaxial Cloth
2 dozen 1 qt plastic mixing buckets and stir sticks
1 - 1/2" x 5" Fiberglass "Bubble" roller
2 dozen Short nap 6" nylon roller covers and trays
2 dozen 3" Chip Brushes (cut ? the length of the bristles off)

My local Lowes and Home Depot don't carry the Arauco Ext. Grade Plywood. Is there a place I can order it or maybe another plywood I can use?
