Re: Mercy....

Derwood, Ross here mate, you sound just like the type of guy that can turn his life around when he wants to. You're doing that right now.
You don't smoke, I don't smoke either. It's good to say that now after a year +, I remember when it was the desire to have one and I kept that, "I don't smoke", saying close to me. It worked. Through thick and thin it worked. No one could take that away from me, and now I'm proud to see somebody else doing it!
I'm going to catch a fish just for Derwood tomorrow, and I'm going to eat it and tell you what it tasted like!
Oh I forgot to say that all this last years fishing hasn't cost the household budget a cent. I kept the tobacco money going into a seperate account on purpose and used it for fishing. Now I don't take a cent from the house! My first wife really likes that one. (she lets me call her my first wife).
Keep it up Derwood, there's a lot of folk out here rooting for you mate!!
Ross

Derwood,

Some others are going to criticize me for this but, here goes.

Don't pick up the pipe-yet. You're right, you will "smoke it".

Give it at least a year. You probably won't want to have anything to with tobacco, but if you do, a "gar" or pipe is the way to go.

I gave up the "heaters" (pack a day) a long time ago. I do today, enjoy a nice cigar while I'm having a beer and cooking on the grille, my favorite-fish Burrito's.

Re: Mercy....

I hear ya Derwood. I smoked exactly the same thing except for the expensive pipes. Cigarettes mostly, but a pipe for years. Just keep saying I don't smoke. With a pipe or a cigar, you still get quite a load of nicotine through your mouth and nose. Not a good thing because it can knock you off the wagon. After a few weeks or months, it will get better. The longer it is the more they will not smell as good. If you smoke one, they will also taste bad the next day. Your mouth will taste like the inside of a old sneaker. You will also notice that your clothes stink when you are in a bar even though you did not smoke. Hang in there Derwood. Smoking is smoking and you do not smoke anymore.

Derwood this is more exiting than... (well you know), We follow your journey to liberation with bated breath. I've been off for 12 years. You are doing the right thing. You are a non smoker right now. 3 Cheers for Derwood. You will not fail. you don't smoke a pipe either you are now a non smoker, you hate the filthy stuff you are now at war with this enemy and he's defeated. Theres to much at stake the odds are to high success is the only outcome you will consider. If you have a moment when the urge attempts to recapture you to slavery promise your ibuddys you'll talk about it first. Good effort. Derwood is a winner.

Re: Mercy....

Day 4,

I bought 3 packs of gum today....I don't chew gum and Have'nt since I was 11 or 12.

The lady in the store watched me closely as I took about 20 minutes picking up and putting down packs of gum.

She did'nt think I was stealing it because I have known her awhile....She just was amazed I was getting a pack of gum and putting that much thought into it.

I finaly bought some black raspberry crap....It tasted real good for the first 45 seconds....after that it was just something to bite....I chewed each piece hard too....Think I broke one....I could only stand so much of that and....HACK PUH...out it went.

I am starveing the bird population of north America....I own all the sunflower seeds in FLA.

I am trying not to eat to substitute something for my mouth to do (besides talk) but the sunflower seeds help me out....I don't think they would be fattening....I am trying to stay away from high sugar stuff (my wife....bless her heart...just bought me a big bag of butterscotch hard rock candies).

Just to make a few of you jelious....my other snack around here for the last few days has been some half fillets of fresh smoked salmon....sent to a freind of mine at work....who said "ya want some?"....."H#LL YEA"....she brought me a winn dixie bag full.

She got it from a freind of hers somewhere up north....It's awsome.

Today was not toooo bad....this morning was better
than yesterday....I am letting my brother-in-law smoke in my truck in the morning on the way to work.....I can smell it more every time and I get the feeling that I'm beating it....I don't want one of his red's....I don't think that I would have wanted one before I quit....but this is a speical circumstance.

I am going to kill the guy at work though....those "captin blacks" are killen me....I don't realy want to smoke one....But even as a kid I loved the smell of pipe tobbaco....And Cavindish or Cavindish mixed with some sweet Virgina is like being in smokey heaven.

He's messen with the one good thing about smoken that I will miss.

Not all tobacco is a bad thing....A "good" cigar for the cigar smokers....every once in awhile can't hurt. A nice full madoro questa rey (1884) or a madoro in partagas....I can't evan think of a trip down to Ebor city....the land of hand rolled heaven (leagal stuff....none of that wacky tabaccy).

And I won't ever berate a sole for smoken a pipe....as long as they don't blow someone out....but I fell that way about all kinds of smokes....just because someone has the right to do something does'nt mean they can or should be rude about it.

I got to go now and strangle the hickory tree....vent a little....you know how it is.

willwood.

P.S. Re: Mercy....

I like the smell of a good pipe tobacco too. I even tried "smoking" one too. But I also have bad sinuses that get much worse when I am around any type of tobacco smoke so I just satisfy my "pipe" smell when I find someone smoking one. I tend to linger in the area a little. Never having been an addict I am not sure what you are going through but I can guess it is prety hard. Just don't lose the reasons you are doing this and you should be fine. BTW it is okay to ask a coworker to please not smoke around you and it might be better if you ban smoking from your truck at least till you kick the habit.

Re: Mercy....

Non smokinwood...camel straights, chesterfeilds, pall malls...hell, I would slide to a girlie Maroboro when I had a cold....finally realized I could smoke or breathe...quit cold turkey how many times during the time I smoked, but the last time I REALLY WANTED TO....an it stuck..dear wife smoked for a year an a half after me, it was hard.
To this day a good cigar would be the temptation that takes me back, but I am too weak to ever light up....I am a non smoker....
20 years from now, hind sight will allow you to smile on this.....do what you have to. but dont light up!

Re: Mercy....

Derwood, after lurking here for months and mostly keeping my mouth shut (better to be quiet and thought a fool, than to open my mouth and remove all doubt) I am always entertained by your thoughts. Whether shadying or being outraged by a transient mother beating her kid in the parking lot, you are the man. Seems I have some salmon hanging around here as well. E-mail me an address and I will augment the non-smoking habit with some used-to-be live alaska goodies....

Kev_Alaska
kehite@gci.net

Re: Mercy....

Dear Wood-

I've been holding off posting this for you, but after what you said you went through today, and still didn't light up, I think you can handle it.

My Dad died many years ago, outside of the USA. At the time, U.S. Dr's/ME's didn't list the root cause, they listed lung cancer, asphyxiation, etc. My dad's death certificate says "Cause of Death: Smoking Cigarettes".

When I married my wife, she had a stepfather. Her biological dad died previously after years of smoking & excessive drinking. When our son was about 2 years old, my wife's stepfather died - smoking.

My son and I (& wife) go camping, fishing, etc. whenever we can, but the normal mid-life duties keep me pretty busy, just like they do for everybody else.

What all of this is leading up to is this - my son doesn't have "grandpa" to go fishing with.

I'm sorry this post reads as a real downer. It isn't meant to be. It is meant to be: look forward to the future. Your wife, daughter, extended family, coworkers, and (as you can see here) dozens if not hundreds of friends you have never even met (which includes me) are all pulling for you!

Email me and I'll reply with my home & work phone numbers. If the pills, patches, and posts aren't getting you over a bad time - call me. mbishop@pacifier.com
