Thanks. Yeah I hear ya, I haven't touched the boat in like 2 or 3 weeks now been too busy with other stuff :-/
Good to hear your going to get started on the drive soon, I'm sure you'll get it looking and working like new! I look forward to seeing the progress.

So I forgot to include some photos of recent work I did on designing a new throttle cable bracket. I am unable to use the old OEM style throttle linkage that mounts to the ex.manifold, since I used this location for mounting the newer Alpha 1 shift cable bracket assembly. Therefore, I mimicked the setup of newer 3.0 liter engines, and have the throttle cable mounted atop of the valve cover, which is far more simple than the old style linkage and is a direct push pull setup. Below is what I whipped up, seems to function like it should!





The only thing I noticed is that the stroke on the cable is 3.0" and the stroke on the carb's throttle lever is 2". Should I be worried about that? Do I need an external WOT stop, so as to not apply any internal stress on the carb, or will the carb be fine the way it is? Thanks.

Hey, Jim the project looks fantastic! I have something similar going on over here, I was curious on how much the boat will weigh after you are through?
the 165 engine is a great platform... lots of torque. have you done any mods to boost the engine power? or just planning on keeping it bone stock reliable.

Excellent work man. Just watched the test run vid. How was it running before the pertronix kit. I may be looking at doing the same.

Great job the 'glass work looks great. The test vid brought back memories of the late 60s early 70s, my next door neighbor had a '64 Chevy Bel Air with an inline six/power glide that sounded exactly the same!

Thank you. I'll have to check out your project. The engine is stock and from what I hear they are solid engines, but not sure what upgrades you can really do on these things. I was thinking of doing a roller valvetrain, but probably not worth the expense.

I had a lot of trouble with getting it to run smooth (I even had the carb rebuilt, which I'm not sure was even necessary), I changed points and it was better but still finicky. After doing the conversion and new coil, it was night and day. I suspect my old coil may have been the culprit.

Woe, can you take some pictures close up of the brackets holding your power steering pump. How is it mounted to the bottom and what does that bracket look like and how is the other bracket attached on the top side where you adjust the tightness of the belt. Could you PM me the pictures. The bracket I have that came off the boat is obviously going to be someone's fabrication work prior to us owning the boat.

Thanks! Good to know it's sounding right! I always loved the Bel Air's, 64's are sweet! This engine is totally new to me, at first I was concerned about the noisy timing gears but I suppose it's normal, but hoping it will quiets down some after break-in.

Sneek peek! Finally finished painting the interior! A total of 3 coats of gelcoat rolled on!!! :rockon:
I have yet to put a layer of csm on the cabin bulkheads and inside the cabin berth area, as those areas originally were carpeted. Those areas can wait for the time being. Next it's onto getting the engine running again and putting the drive back in place!

Thanks guys!! Feels good to be at this stage now, and have the hull for the most part behind me.

FYI - I found out the trick to getting the smoothest results with rolling on the gelcoat, is to work in fairly small batches and get it on as fast as possible. I mixed up 500ml batches at a time, and aimed to get it all on within 15mins. As it starts to kick, it thickens of course, so the sooner you get it on the better it will self level out nice and smooth! (Pretty much common sense, I know) Another thing is I ran out of my smaller 1/4" nap rollers I typically use, so for the final coat I instead used some foam rollers I had laying around. I think the foam rollers work really well too in obtaining a smooth finish, might even be better than the nap rollers. Only thing is the poly resin sort of makes them balloon up a bit and expand some during use which is a bit strange, but it worked.

That's some nice work...you'll be fishing in no time at this pace. Always good to note like you do on technique that works as you'll forget how you did certain things 5 years from now when you get a bit nutty and decide to do another one :)
