Mercruiser 470 voltage regulator smoking

I recently bought an old boat with a 470. The first sea trial was great. No issues at all. The next day, I took it out, and after about 10 minutes, there was electrical smoke bellowing from under the engine cover. I turned off the engine and main battery switch, and it stopped. When I turned the battery back on, I could see that the sorce of the smoke was a terminal on the liquid cooled voltage regulator. (Yellow and orange wire) Does anyone know what can cause this? Is it fixable? Can anyone recommend a good alternator conversion kit available in Canada?

Sierra Marine # 18-5953-1. This kit replaces the charging system with a 1 wire Delco alternator. Comes with all needed hardware. Easy to install no special tools needed.
If the starter on your engine has a solenoid mounted on the starter you will also need Sierra # 18-8220 fuse kit.
If the starter has no solenoid then the fuse is not needed.
You do not even want to repair that charging system, the parts are expensive.

Whoa, $750! That's crazy for a $100 alt and a bracket. I think I paid less than ½ from breezeworks .

I have access to a laser, a lathe, and a pile of alternators.

I wouldn't pay more than $300-$350

If you go with Breezeworks, remember to center the pully on the balancer.

The kit I bought from Breezeworks also uses the OEM balancer. They also have a high mount and a low mount kit. I think it was around $345., but dont remember
