Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One Gen 2

Hey Folks,

Ok so just did my water impeller and was surprisingly in great shape. This boat is new to me keep in mind. It's a 1991 Monterey Bowrider with Merceuiser 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen 2.

I did notice when winterizing that there was small black chunks of rubber in the water, that's why was quick to jump to the impeller but nope... so impeller is done now confused what the black rubber was from did the previous owner maybe change the impeller well I know he did at some point with all the darn gasket maker he had in there....

I'm not sure where to look next BUT I do want to check the exhaust flappers, this wouldn't get in the cooling system I wouldn't think but remember I said it's new to me so wanna make sure the flapper is OK.

Exhaust flapper question. How many is there? The one inside under the exhaust riser and is there another one at the transom?

Fingers crossed only the one below the riser elbows...

Anyone have a part number for the flapper(s)?

Only one flapper below the rubber exhaust connector, that would be a good guess as to what you're seeing.

There is only one in the exhaust system on a 3.0 Mercruiser?

Yes go to marine engine . Com put your serial number in and you will see all the parts diagrams

Anyone know what the little chunks of black rubber could be since it's not the impeller? Guess could be from previous owner prior to impeller change but changing it myself I am amazed the gasket maker this guy uses... when I did the exhaust gasket for the riser it wad the same damn thing...

Really wanna get to the bottom of this rubber chunks mystery tho....

Haven't been into the exhaust yet, would that get into the cooling system tho?

I think I misunderstood...
The rubber was when you drained the block? If that's the case then no, it wouldn't be the shutters. For some reason I thought you found it in the exhaust cavity while doing the impeller.

No it was during winterizing the boat and draining the block.... as mentioned new to me so been doing alot of work prior to being stuck in the middle of the lake lol.

Oh while you great folks are trying to help me... I noticed when I went to unplug the speedo cable, that there was no cable, nothing... where can I find a diagram of where this is supposed to be located so I can either locate it or atleast plug it off so it doesn't cause issues. I don't mine getting a gps speedometer.

Speedo doesn’t use a cable. It’s a pitot tube which uses water pressure

My issue is nothing was plugged into the back of the drive.

Where would I look to locate this or replace this? I am more concerned about water getting in the boat if the tube is missing all together.

I am very open to using a GPS speedometer.

Any thoughts on how to get all these rubber pieces out of the block? Think previous owner must of ran it with these in there...thinking pull the transfer pump and thermostat and just start pumping water like crazy through the block from different points...

Only way to really do it is remove the engine and pull core plugs. You can try filling and draining repeatedely but don’t think you’ll get much out

Well new flapper installed... there was absolutely nothing there but now a proper flapper installed....
