Just unwinterized my 18' Larson I/O with 1985 Mercruiser MCM140-MR engine. I changed both fuel filters and also changed oil in sterndrive and engine. When winterized, I did put stabilizer in the fuel.
While on land, starting it up was pain-free and she ran ok. Took her to the bay to launch and had trouble starting her. Once started, she ran fine, until I put her into gear. She'd run for a minute, then die. Repeat a few times. Finally I thought just getting her underway might help. Tossed off the lines and ran her at about 1200-1500rpm and she did fine. Got her up to about 2000rpm and ran for an hour. Slowed down at an island in our bay and she died, but started right up. Repeat the same proceedure - and she ran for 7 miles at about 2000 rpm fine. Didn't die when I got into the river and ran up to the dock.
Went to start her a few days later and she'd sputter but never started this time. Starter is fine, brand new mid-summer. Voltage/oil pressure all at normal.
She did have this problem a little bit at the beginning of last year, but once we got to mid-summer, I don't think it ever stalled on me. Ran her right into December (mild temps here at the time).
I thought perhaps the fuel filter(s) had been dirty - having just bought it that spring, I wasn't sure when they were changed out. I did note that I failed to soak the main filter before inserting it, but I'd think that having run for an hour and a half +, that would be ok by now.
Any thoughts?
