Help! I've got a 1990 17' VIP w 165hp 2.5L 4cyl. Last summer the motor started making a pinging noise when under a load such as pulling a skier or accelerating with a boat full of people. Got steadily worse this summer so I replaced points, condenser, plugs and plug wires, and cap... no luck. Next I replaced the carb with a refurb from Flying Fish. The throttle response and idle is great but pinging still remains. I've also tried adding octane booster with no luck. Any ideas?

sounds like detonation caused by too low octane, not enough fuel. make sure you have proper fuel pressure, and that the carb itself is actually working properly. check for vacuum leaks, either in vacuum hoses, or around gasket area of intake manifold. also, check the ignition timing. too far advanced will cause this pinging.

try and time it at the recommended base settings 8, 10 ? degrees then open it up to and see if it comes in on the recommended advance curve for example 32 degrees at 3000 rpm.
your pinging could be because your to advanced?
