MerCruiser 140 Alternator heating Up

'85 MerCruiser 3.0L 140 - the alternator seems to be getting hot. Is this normal? Shot a thermal gun at it, read 135? - seems a bit warm, no? How to test an alternator? Thanks.

Yes, they get hot. Low batteries makes it even worse as they are charging more.

What alternator do you have. When running above ~1200 rpm, you should be seeing 14 to 14.5 V on the meter.

The battery is new, bit not fully charged, so that may be it. Alternator looks original.
