I am in favor of legalizing marijuana for personal use and put age limit on it like cigs or liquor. My thoughts are that this would distance it from the drug dealers who hook people on the hard stuff. thought this would be interested.

I agree, put it in stores like liquor stores tax the hell out of and use the money to educate our kids! Use the money saved in fighting it to fight the hard sh!t that really needs to be off the street.
Well there it is, out in the open!
Richard

That's a great idea. We've done so well educating kids about alcohol... I'm sure we could do the same with marijuana.

I sat on a highway the police closed this morning for two hours while they extracted the dead body of a woman from her crushed car. Eight vehicles involved, multiple ambulances and medi-vac choppers taking the injured away.

So I am not in much of a mood to support the proposal that more people can drive around both drunk and stoned on our highways. Commuting is dangerous enough as it is.

Mark do you think it would increase the use of marijuana? I am not sure because I would bet I could find some on the street within an hour if I looked right now. Making it illegal has not taken it away from those who chose to smoke it.

Without a doubt, use would increase. And without a doubt someone who can buy it legal will sell it to some kid who can't. Without a doubt, more kids will be stoned in class.

Look at booze. Just because its legal does not force people to use it responsibly.

Taxed heavily and controlled like booze it would certainly shut down the multimillion dollar traffic. But:

Is it any harder to detect this intoxication than alcohol? Does getting high alter behavior, judgement and coordination like booze?

Is someone who is high a dangerous driver? Is habitual use dangerous?

I have read that it causes gradual, irreversible brain damage. That would explain some of the regular and/or habitual users I have known.

One of the European countries (Switzerland?) did an about-face after legalizing pot. Seems things went south within about 6-mons time. Lots of problems with kids getting their hands on it, etc. Pretty much every problem the anti-pot crowd claims will happen actually did happen.

Mark, Sorry to hear about your morning. Nothing like being close to death and seeing someone who starts off the day headed to work only to have it all come to an end so quick to make us realize how precious and fragile our lives really are.

Had similar ache in stomach this day as two high school kids ( I did not know them) killed in crash where car ignited and burned them.

I would be anti-marijuana totally if I thought the War on Drugs would work, but I see it only as putting money in dealers pockets.

I dont know there's alot maybes and what ifs,it could be taxed heavily and treated like booze, would probably get alot of revenue and could even help local econemy,it would give some farmers a better crop to grow, what am i talking anout they'll shut it down just like the tobacco farmers. But as far as driving and stoned,All the stoned drivers i seen back in the day were actually better drivers than the drunk ones, but driving stoned or drunk is not smart but people do it every day,If people want pot there going to get it,if they want booze there going to get it.Might as well make some money off the sales and try to make some good out of it.

It will never happen ......To much money to be made......The maijuana trade is a billion dollar industry....... For the courts, law enforcement & lawyers! ......They could never tax it the way they would like.......And it is too easy to grow.....There would be no need to go to the store & buy it......JK

I'm, like, conflicted dude . . . I think I'm with Ron G. Less destructive than Alcohol and we could really use the money. Why help an underground economy by keeping it illegal? This is the type of tax hike I could support. Incremental $ and saves on law enforcement costs. You could probably slap a 90% tax on it and still be "competitive". Compeptitive with what? I don't know . . .

JB, it is not about detecting intoxication, isn't it actually about impairment. Wouldn't motor skills tests be sufficient? i.e. if the vehicle can be operated safely, does it matter?

Bad Idea. Next thing you know you have pot-ciggarettes being sold by the pack at the local gas station. Then you have the pot breaks for work... productivity of people on the job will drop, companies will go out of business, unemployment will skyrocket, the government will go bankrupt due to the lack of taxable income being brought in. Schools will deteriorate and kids will have to be home-schooled by taught by their pothead parents. United States of America wastes away into millions of underproductive square miles of land just waiting for Al Qaeda to take over. Saddam walks out of prison because he is being watched by a bunch of potheads, convinces the potheads that he should be and becomes the next president of the United States and marries Hillary Clinton. H*ll on earth now exists.

And that is my analysis of legalizing pot. :D :D

Sean

Re: Marijuana-legalize and tax

The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 just needs to be repealed. That is what made it illegal. It was debated for less than 3 minuets without the representation from a doctor and it was over 90* that day in the capital building. That also was prior to air condition. I'm just surprised that an attorney somewhere hasn't challenged how it was passed.

For those that are worried about our youth smoking it. Well, there are more youths that smoke it now than ever. It seems with all the drug screens, the recreational smokers had to give it up or their jobs. So that means the market has been pushed upon our children.

Why did the Indians want to smoke the peace pipe? Because after smoking it, nobody would have the urge to fight. I think it would reduce domestic violence tremendously.

There are pros and cons to everything. One pro is the amount of tax money spent for the enforcement of the law would save millions as well as making millions if it was legalized.

Re: Marijuana-legalize and tax

Most people here obviously aren't aware that marijuana was made illegal only for industrial and political reasons.

I'm sure most of you already know my opinion, I'm not going to spend all day arguing about it in this thread. I think it should be legal and taxed at $2-300/ounce. It would end up being rougly the same price it is today, and the state would be able to afford gold teeth and escalades with spinners instead of the drug dealers. Also having such a high cost would keep alot of people from using it, especially kids. Look at how many people quit smoking when they raise the price of ciggs to $7+ a pack. Think if they were $300 a pack. Most people wouldn't be able to afford it.

I don't think it's ever going to be legal though, there are WAY too many people that believe the stupidest lies about marijuana, and way too many official sources distributing this propaganda.
