Re: Magnumdeke's 1969 Starcraft Islander Restoration

Ya tonight I will get interior pics, gonna take a night or so to build a cart to move it around and flip for bottom shots. I knew the damage was there just got some cold feet thinking about the money I am going to stick into this with the potential for hull failure or leaking. I can fix anything, we are just going to have to think it through!!!

Ya don't look good does it, I just wonder if it can be stopped or not??? Drill the ends of the cracks and weld??? Risky way to spend 7 to 10 grand fixin up a boat I have to worry about cracking apart............

OK, so wait, question...

Are you a welder? One with lots of excellent alum welding experience?

Re: Magnumdeke's 1969 Starcraft Islander Restoration

OK, well, here's what I was thinking....

I'm not a welder, so, I don't know very much. But what I do know is that welding alum is a tricky biz. To get it right and strong is a challenge. Also, re welding really messes with the strength of the original alum material.

Anyway, if you would have to pay somebody to do it, forget it. The expense would be silly and no telling the welders experience/quality even if you did pay the price.

Now if you have the skills, maybe take a run at it. But, if it were me, I'd also run some mechanical means to make the repairs. In other words, alum patches, plenty of 5200 and closed end rivets, right over top of the welds too. Easy? No way. Those angles and ribs and stuff will make for some complex and tedious fabrication work.

IF you could get a solid weld AND a backup patch over the cracks/damage, I'd feel pretty good about moving forward.:)

If not........

well....

:(

It almost look's like it was crushed from the sides. Your already prepped for weld except reoming the ribs above the cracks drill hole at crack ends and bevel tig a couple overlapping beads and maybe a patch plate seam the outside after grinding out old welds leak test and give her a try witht he O/D hole patched over and a small tiller attached on the water to see if she holds. But I'm sure you have been runnin scenerios in your head already! Keep updating. Good luck!!!!

Re: Magnumdeke's 1969 Starcraft Islander Restoration

I think most of the repairs could be done from the outside with some welds on the interior for the rib and rib rivets repair, drill ends of cracks, weld cracks, weld heads of rivets in place, weld patches over rivets and the welded cracks and maybe then 5200 patches over everything with new rivets out side of the whole original foot print, all exterior work. Now for the cracked chine all I got is to drill out the end of the cracks and weld inside and outside and grind, sand, polish the exterior, still wonder if that chine will recrack! Gotta flip it and check it out. Hate to scrap it, but....????>>> Scary!!!!! to say the least. I have confidence in my skills but not in tired Iron so to speak!!

Well here goes the flip

Got it off the trailer by myself and then enlisted two coworkers to help flip it by hand, Piece of cake!!!
Made a rolling platform out of two 4x4's. 1 sheet of O.S.B, and three dunnage boards, and 4 8" casters. Rolls like a dream.
Next post will be the rest of the bad stuff

I have hope for this boat:redface:

If you are comfortable with your abilities to weld and are game to fab up patches n stuff, I do believe she can float again.:)
