You guys are doing a great job convencing me to restore the boat! I'm about 95 percent convienced, especailly if I can get some advice from the old salts around here!

I'm not concerned about it ever being beautiful but I didn't want a horror show on my hands...heck if the boat could survive my dad for 10 years it's got to be tough!

The boat hasn't been run in 6 years, the engine had an issue where it would only start in a position between neutral and forward. I imagine I would have to put some time and money into the engine...I was more worried about sinking it than being stalled

1. What does the engine start up issue sound like to you guys? Its nothing to simple since the engine was serviced years ago and always came back with the same issue...I imagine my dad was too cheap to pay and get it fixed.

2. I bet the transom is rotted and I will have to remove that 400lb engine. Not sure how to accomplish that, any thoughts?

Thanks for all the encouragement! If I get into this and decide I cant handle it you guys will get first shot at the boat or parts

I would not let this boat out of my site. If you have a place to work on it, you can just take your time and spend the money as you can.
There is so much information here you can't go wrong.
To remove the engine you can rent a engine hoist for a half day for $35 to $50 or you could build one. Some guys here have used there
joist in the garage.
Just do alot of reading, keep really good notes and lots of pics. Just remember it may be next year before you start to put it back together and you would hate to say ( How Did this Go Back Together) I take pics of everything. I don't post them all here but I keep my camera with me.

I am sure you will be able to handle the restore. Where theres a will theres a way. And lots of ways to do it right.
Looking forward to seeing you get started. Put up lots of pics and don't be afraid to ask question.

I personally would not start An engine that sat for six years without replacing the water pump first. Start on the boat first than the engine. take on one project at a time

Don't worry about that ole motor, yet, they make them everyday. Me, I did fix up an old 12' semi v. Nothing to brag about but by golly it'll take me fishing!

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I will bring the boat home on the 5th and attack it like a mad man. Super excited about it.

I will start a new thread once I get into the Project and keep it updated!

One question so I can start shopping for supplies this weekend. If I buy marine grade ply, how thick should it be...I did replace one floor board 10 years back and it looked great but had some flex near the corner that was undesirable...it appeared to be the exact same thickness as what I took out so I was suprised by that.

3/4" ABX plywood will make a good strong build and will be about half the price of marine plywood.

I wouldn't use "marine ply" it is heavier, more expensive, and the chemicals used to treat it may cause a bad reaction with aluminum,..

Plain old 1/2 exterior grade ply treated with two part epoxy should suffice,..

What kind of shape is the transom in??

You might as well plan on that as well,...If your gonna do it go "all in"!!

My ProV 1800 deck was a combination of 1/2 & 3/4 inch deck. I used BC exterior ply and coated it with epoxy then carpet.

Don't cut corners use 3/4" marine ply. there is a reason they call it marine ply. ck my prov that i redid.

The thing I don't like about "marine" plywood is the chemicals they treat it with eat aluminum,.

That is a BAD thing in a aluminum boat,...

But that is just my opinion,....

marine ply is not treated. besides this is what lund uses. the extra step i took was epoxy all sides.

To my understanding the marine grade plywood is made with less voids in it. It will usally have more layers of plywood in it to make up its thickness. It is glued together with waterproof glue. It is a higher quality wood. I have never read or seen anything that states the marine grade has chemicals that will eat aluminum.

On the other hand there is pressure treated plywood that you can buy in the big box stores that will destory a aluminum boat.
Under no circumstance should you use pressure treated plywood in your boat.

The exterior grade plywood has a few more viods in it and has a few less layers of plywood to make up its thickness. It is also glued together with waterproof glue. The marine grade will cost about $80.00 a sheet and the exterior will coat about $45.00

If you seal and install the deck correctly and keep the maintenance up and cover the boat properly to keep it out of the weather, then either of the plywood will work very well. If you don't take care of the boat neither one will last more than a few years.

There are many people here that have there preferred plywood to use. If this were my boat I would use the exterior plywood in a 3/4" thickness and save the money to use somewhere else on the restore. I would use the 3/4" because I like the feeling of how strong it is.

I can see the flooring issue is a hot one on this site! That just means people make more informed decisions...I'm going to re-check the details on marine eating alum, but if its okay then I will go that way for two reasons:

1. I like to procastinate so if this buys me another 5 years of use before I have to do it again then great.
2. It was mentioned that it is more rigid in some of the posts due to consturction, material and layering ect...I have one flexy peice I installed and I want to avoid a repeat of that

You can't go wrong with marine grade plywood. Just make sure it is sealed correctly and when you install it seal all the fasteners you use with 3m 5200.

I don't think you will get 5 more years by using marine grade over the exterior in any application. Just spend more money.
I know there is no chemicals in marine grade plywood that will do any harm to your boat. As stated in a earlier post, Lund uses the marine grade plywood from the factory.

If you do use the marine grade you will be using the best grade.

When I did my Lund S14 DLX I used 5/8" CDX because that is the thickness that Lund used to deck this boat. I also just used about 4 coats of Spar varnish on all sides because this boat is garage kept and only sees water inside when caught out on the lake in the rain. Which isn't very often!

Wow, great discussion. Once I find out how many sheets I need I may be forced to reconsider the marine plywood option, because budget is an issue (got to keep the wife happy). And it is likely that I am paying 2x times as much for a similar product, but the lack of voids, slight increase in strength ect make me personally feel like it might be worth the investment. My boat will be outside all year, and I fish in the rain so it will be WET!

The more horrible concern is that I am almost certain that the two pieces of deck I replaced 10 years ago were with pressure treated, based on the advice of the guy and home depot who didn’t know anything about boats. I am hoping I am wrong or I will likely have made some extra work for myself. Ill have to pull up those boards fist thing and see on the 5th!

Thanks for all the great feed back. I have been doing a lot of research on hull repair and once I have collected all of the info and done some more searching here we can argue the merits of each of those methods! Apparently a friends neighbor is a welder experienced with alum, so I will also post his feedback.

I used three sheets of marine 3/4" for the deck, and one sheet of 1/2" for the side panels. and console base hopfully the pt did not cause too much of an issue for you, just sand the area and wipe with a solution of vingar and water, don't forget to wear a dust mask

I am not sure when this happened but the chemicals that where used to pressure treat wood was banned and the new chemicals or the ones that destory the aluminum. You may have used the old type pressure treated and don't have a problem. When you take it up you will be able to tell if there is any damage.
