I am new to this forum. I have been fishing since I was 5 years old. I currently own a 1978 Lund Pro Pike 18, my previous boat was a Skeeter 15.5 ft bass boat. The Lund is in need of repair. The motor runs but the floor was rotted and the foam was soaked with water. I want to restore this boat as close to original as possible. I am having a hard time trying to find what this boat looked like originally. Contacted Lund, they couldn't help me. My first concern is the foam, what foam do I use? I do not want to use the expanding foam because there is a channel down the middle of the boat to let out water. I already bought 3/4" marine grade plywood for the floor. Do I seal the plywood? If so with what? There is a live well behind and to the left of the steering wheel. The plug goes thru the bottom of the floor. I can get the T-handle plug, but not the housing that screws to the bottom of the boat. I would like to replace it because the screws are really corroded. I am going to try and attach a pic of this boat and the plug for the live well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, welcome to the iboats drydock 24/7!:welcome:

For your flotation most of the alum boat guys go with pink/blue foam board or pool noodles.

You definitely want to seal up your plywood. You can use porch and floor paint, varnish, poly resin and fiberglass, epoxy resin and fiberglass, or just epoxy alone. The majority go with just epoxy but any of those will work fine.

Sorry I can't help ya on your livewell plug there - I'm still kinda trying to figure it out yet.

Do you have pics of the inside of your boat?

You may want to check your transom wood for rot if you haven't already.

Does the hull leak, or is all the rot and wet foam from being left out in the weather uncovered with the plug in?

Epoxy resin is the best deck sealer. What do you plan to put on the deck, carpet?

Is that an all aluminum livewell?

Yes the boat is aluminum, the live well is plastic. The whole boat had carpet not sure if that is the way it was originally. I will have to check the transom. I believe the boat was stored outside, there was a ring line about 1" above the floor on the inside of the boat. The whole floor was not rotted. Parts of the floor had been replaced previously. I pulled all the carpet and plywood to check the rest of the foam in the boat. It was all soaked except under the front bow where the fuel tank is. It is in storage right now. I was told it would cost $2000 to repair the foam and floor. I figured I could do it myself a lot cheaper. I will have to resize the pics of the inside of the boat.

I was reading some other threads that said 3/4" plywood my add too much weight to a boat? Should I go with 1/2" instead?

All depends on your support/span underneath that deck.

Let's see some photos of what yur working with there.

Nah, that's just for little boats. I have 3/4" in my 17' Tracker.

The difference between 1/2" and 3/4" is 25 lbs. per sheet.

Re: Lund Pro Pike 18?

Don't have pics of the spacing on the floor. It's in storage. It was metal cross members about 18" (I'm guessing) apart. The floor was screwed down to the cross pieces. I am just getting itchy to get started on this boat as the weather here really hasn't been wintery, although it got cold, 10 degrees this morning, not MN weather though. Once I get going I will take pics and post them as project progresses. I always wanted a Lund boat, growing up in MN they were the top of line. This boat came from MN, picked it up here for cheap. Want to get it fixed up and bring it back. Just can't find anything out about this boat. Here is the vin # LUNC0025M78F

Lunds are excellent heavy duty aluminum boats and very well built. When you get her put back together and fixed up you'll have a very nice boat.

Do you have a heated garage to work on stuff?

Unfortunately no. Can't even fit it in my garage, too long.

Can you work on sealing your decking in the garage?... or are you going to have to wait for warm weather to do that?

Going to have to wait for little warmer weather. Have it stored in a pole barn garage, few miles away, I can work on it there. Have too many other toys in my garage. Thanks for link. First time I have seen anything close to what I have.

Looking at that catalog it looks like I have a Pike 18 deluxe. What kind of wood would have been used? Plywood or something different? On mine everything was carpeted. I like the wood look.

Re: Lund Pro Pike 18?

Plywood, and you don't have to use the expensive marine grade. Use the ABX plywood, the A side looks real nice and you can put the B side down. The X stands for exterior grade, this is very important... exterior grade plywood is made with waterproof glue.

The pretty birch, oak, and cherry plywood you see at Home Depot and Lowes is for cabinets and indoor use, it is not made with waterproof glue.
