Lower Unit Oil

Can anyone tell me what type of lubricant I need to use in the lower unit of my 1956 Evinrude Fastwin 15. The only thing I have found online is Lubriplate #105 white grease, but I also found that is not recommended for engines with a shifter. Any thoughts?

Outboard gearcase lubricant "HiVis" 80/90w, available at EWal*Mart, K-Mart, dealerships, marine type stores, etc. It'll state HiVis gearcase oil on the container.

+1. Here's a pic. You'll probably want to get a pump too. They should sell them right nest to the oil itself.

Don't ever use the Lubricate # 105 in that g/c. It was designed for mtrs a lot older than yours.

Thank you very much gentlemen. Another question: when I dropped the lower unit, the o-ring at the top of the drive shaft was seriously damaged. I don't really see the point of it in the fist place. Is it okay to put it together without the o-ring?

If you omit the o-ring, water can ride up the driveshaft and get to the crankshaft. The result will be a driveshaft rusted into the crank. You don't want that to happen.

But don't put any grease on the very top of the splines.

The o-ring comes in a lower unit reseal kit along with oil seals, spaghetti seal and the Drain/Vent washers. You can get a kit right here at iboats for about $20.
