Greetings, I have a 92 mercruiser 5.7, serial #0c460205, stern drive #0c581330...
So, I ran her quite a few runs up and down the river. I typically am very careful of fluid maintenance, operation maintenance, and safety are my main priorities. No one else takes on those concerns nor should they.

That being said, I neglected my gear lubricant with the exception of topping it off nicely once over the past 12 months.

Well, It had used up quite a bit unbeknownst to me cause I was not in the habit of keeping an eye on it. Last week after buttoning her all up for the spring/summer season, I took her out for a spin and suddenly I lost forward with a song and all I could do was reve her up...in neutral. Anyway got a tow back and pulled the upper gear housing cape and all the gears I can see are just shamefully sheared away!

So now what? I can only imagine what it would cost to have someone rebuild that upper housing (I'm sure I can't afford it) I doubt anyone would want it as is for $1000.00 bucks...I don't know If I can take on such a job. I've done everything else myself (is: carb rebuild, gimble bearing, impellar, shift cable, etc.) Just not sure about such or if is simply beyond my scope of skill..

Any comments or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely, broken down and bummed out.

Hi there, Welcome to iboats forums.
Where do you reside?

Serial number 0C581330 shows the stern drive to be an 1989 MERCRUISER R.H. ROTATION ALPHA, 1.50:1 Gear Ratio, "Model number 5010150BS..., https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercruiser/oem-parts/stern-drive/1989/5010150bs?mdl=5GSZIK&q=0c581330

Maybe an aftermarket complete upper housing at a bit more affordable cost may fit your needs from SEI if available to you..., https://www.sterndrive.cc/Mercruiser-Sterndrive.html

Also there is a chance your lower unit gear housing is contaminated with metal shavings too which should require a tear down and cleaning.

The engine serial number also suggests it's an 1989 Stern Drive 5.7L [ALPHA] Model Number 457B100BR..., https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercruiser/oem-parts/stern-drive/1989/457b100br?mdl=OPI6DP&q=0c460205

sounds like its time to scan Craigslist for a beater boat to scavenge the outdrive off of. Fairly easy to change out, and be back on the water

This is the best answer. On an alpha gen one or earlier drive without the lube monitor bottle, best to check the lube level frequently. If the input shaft seal goes the lube leaks into the bellows and you will never see it before the upper gear set runs dry.

If its in a lift or trailer kept easy to check every time open the bottom and look for water or milk, check the level up top

Thank you for your time with my issues, I appreciate it very much.
Now, I happen to have 1upper unit serial #0C827711, and another whole drive (upper & ,lower) serial # 6339973...would either of these be compatible?

Ayuh,...... Only if they had a V8 motor in front of 'em, originally, 'n of the same series of drive, ei: Alpha 1, or Gen.II,.....

With Fun Times comment in post #2, we still don't know whether you have an Alpha 1, or a Gen.II, as the Gen.IIs came out in '91,.....

Well, it has an angled fin coming down from upper unit. Does that help? It also has a dipstick on top of upper unit cap...any other way I can qualify it?
Thank you for your time and insight sir.

0C827711 suggests this drive to be an 1989 Stern Drive R.H. ROTATION, ALPHA [1.98:1] Model number 5010198BS.

Even though not totally uncommon to see this from time to time, Being the boat year is 1992 and the engine components are 1989 makes it a bit of challenge to offer accurate suggestions because of the year components interchangeability we know it to be.

As mentioned, we’d need to see what yours looks like to try and help a bit better guidance wise.

That second drive comes up as a 1.84 mc-1. Probably won't work but *may* be able to prop around it. What pitch prop do you have on there now?

Ok, I'll go have a gander this am. Meanwhile, Bondo, I understand that one can count the teeth of the gear to further verify...but what gear does one count from?

BTW, to answer your original question I live now in South Western Arizona on the Colorado River known as the Parker Strip although most of my life was spent on the West coast Southern California...
