Ayuh,..... I donno how yer spinnin' such a prop, as the Alpha drives only have 16" between the prop shaft, 'n the housing,....

My best guess is, with the 1.5:1 ratio, you'll need a 21" or 23" pitch, which will be something just over 14" diameter,.....

Yeah look in by your propeller nut on the hub, 2818 is prob just the solas rubex part number . Normally by the prop nut (may need to remove to see) there will be like 15x 17 for diameter x pitch.

before you buy a lower gear reduction drive make sure you can get a prop in the lower pitch.

Meanwhile, so disassembling and replacing and shimming the gears with new is something I want to avoid? And is such to costly to pay someone to do for me?
The cost of the required tools, equipment, parts, manuals would be more expensive than a brand new drive from Mercruiser. Or 2 drives from SEI

So one last question...my alternate upper unit is an alpha 1 gen 1...so obviously can't use my gen 2 lower... any reason I can't put a whole alpha gen 1 outdrive with same gear ratio as my alpha 2 and mate it toy transom?
I sourced a 21 x 14.5 prop BTW...

Thank you in advance...

So I need alpha gen 2 period. Ok. I'll deal with that.
Thank you guys very much. Now that I'm completely depressed just short of suicidal (figuratively of course)...

Bondo, with all due respect, I was reading in some forum (now I can't find it) where you were in fact endorsing some dude that was considering an almost exact scenario going from gen 2 to gen 1 in swapping a 3.0 with a 4.3 on a Rinell that the 3.0 and alpha 1 gen 2 we're bad. So, now you are against it? I don't get it....

Likely the post you reference the guy had a older boat with a good gen one and engine and a rotten hull and a another boat with a good hull with bad engine and gen 2. He was likely telling him to do a pulleys to prop swap out for more power ...

At a high level/plug and play - A gen 2 wont bolt up to a gen 1 transom assembly or vice versa. But Alpha gen one and gen two use the same keyhole in the transom so if you did swap a gen 2 to gen 1 you can do it by keeping the drive and transom assembly together.

Im sure some of the bits and pieces between the generations interchange but for bolt in no..

you cant mix Gen 1 and Gen 2 parts. But you can swap the whole transom shield AND drive AND coupler, etc.

Ayuh,..... Donno the thread, nor the context,......

You can mount a Alpha 1 to a Gen.II bellhousing, but only after you swap all of the shift linkages to gen.I, 'n the oil fill port would have to be plugged, or you could swap in a Alpha 1 bellhousing(I think), but then you've got a gen.I, 'n it's no longer a Gen.II, which is still current issue,....

I've never tried it, but spent several hours talkin' 'bout it with a super good Merc tech, years ago,.....
We came to the conclusion, that it Probably could be done, but why the 'ell would you,.....

Ayuh,.... Ya gotta drill 2 more holes for the Gen.II,.....

Well, while I have my integrity in tact, I cannot seem to rise to the financial standards that many of you have. I'm retired now (although one would never know it just by looking at me...but shhhh, that's what she said!) Anyway, when one is on a budget, one tries to maintain within the boundaries of spending...

Now if (edit, rule # 8, mods) a recently rebuilt alpha 1 gen 1 I'll sell the complete sterndrive for $1000 so as to allow me to turn around and buy a gen2 upper to attach properly to my dog...that is why gentlemen!

No one is on this site because they have too much money to throw at their boat...

Put your gen 1 drive on craiglist, FB marketplace or ebay it will sell. Then buy your drive

OK Ney Sayers! I completely swapped my damaged a1 gen 2 with my A1 gen 2 (including bell housing) and wahla! I launched it yesterday with complete success... forward, netral, reverse all in tact and functional. I will take some photos and post over weekend! Thank you all for your support one more time!
