Ok, so I pulled the decal which wraps around the upper case...it shows underneath a different serial# 0F491312 and a gear stamp of 1.65 !?! What? Anyway I got a weird propeller # ROBEX2818.... I'll attach photos.

Thats a gen two would stillgo by bondos comment of getting a SEI drive.
i would be worried about why someone sealed the transom housing to transom with rtv and 5200. Usually if that is leaking it is due to a rotten transom.

Yeah, your sister drives are useless unfortunately. Some 5.0 came with 1.65, didn't know the 5.7 did though. Agree with Scotts comment about the transom... I'd make extra sure it's sound before continuing

When my input shaft froze up due to losing my gear oil to a crack in the lower unit I just ordered a complete new upper and lower from SEI (Stern Drive Engineering)

No Idea where your located so shipping could be expensive

Well, that seal goo was me being in a hurry just to make everything was covered...not very sophisticated I'll admit.

So, now what should I look for in searching for a replacement?IMG_20220404_140212.jpgIMG_20220404_140146.jpg
0F491312 shows the drive to be a 1995 Stern Drive STANDARD ROTATION ALPHA [1.65:1] Model number 5010165HS, https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercruiser/oem-parts/stern-drive/1995/5010165hs?mdl=OMGONS&q=0F491312

Is there any other engine and Transom assembly serial number too by chance too? Just so you know what you have going on there in Parker. :)(y)
https://www.nytdrev.dk/serienummer-i-8.html

The prop "looks like" it may be an 18 pitch Rubex by Solas propellers. https://www.rubexprops.com/
Ok, but if my budget falls short of an SEI replacement, what ratio would I need to find in a used unit? I mean what should I search for?

Ok, got Cha, thank you all for your time and efforts. I now have what I need to go forward...anything else I need to be aware of?

Meanwhile, so disassembling and replacing and shimming the gears with new is something I want to avoid? And is such to costly to pay someone to do for me?

All 3 of those serial numbers do not correspond to the equipment you seem to have... Those are all let's still call them first generation Alpha components made in 1989 but your boat is a 1992 and you have a 1995 Gen 2 stern drive... Late 1991 was the year change between the two Alpha designs which typically suggests you'd have the gen 2 design which you do stern drive wise.

That cover in the photo belongs to another boat according to the serial numbers so be careful when using them to look up parts and other information.

It seems odd that you had to peel back another sticker to find the 0F491312.

There may or may not be other numbers so keep an eye out for them.

Greetings, I have a 92 mercruiser 5.7, serial #0c460205, stern drive #0c581330...
So, I ran her quite a few runs up and down the river. I typically am very careful of fluid maintenance, operation maintenance, and safety are my main priorities. No one else takes on those concerns nor should they.

That being said, I neglected my gear lubricant with the exception of topping it off nicely once over the past 12 months.

Well, It had used up quite a bit unbeknownst to me cause I was not in the habit of keeping an eye on it. Last week after buttoning her all up for the spring/summer season, I took her out for a spin and suddenly I lost forward with a song and all I could do was reve her up...in neutral. Anyway got a tow back and pulled the upper gear housing cape and all the gears I can see are just shamefully sheared away!

So now what? I can only imagine what it would cost to have someone rebuild that upper housing (I'm sure I can't afford it) I doubt anyone would want it as is for $1000.00 bucks...I don't know If I can take on such a job. I've done everything else myself (is: carb rebuild, gimble bearing, impellar, shift cable, etc.) Just not sure about such or if is simply beyond my scope of skill..

Any comments or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely, broken down and bummed out.
buy some tools!

In theory you can do it your self if you have the merc specific tools ($$), a factory manual, and some decent know how.

I think usually if you are paying someone to redo it You end up at the $2k SEI aftermarket cost or the new Merc ($3400) cost pretty quick the gear set kit alone is $600 https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER++43803104T+1

A friend with a Bravo 3 recently found that the cost of repairing his drive after upper gearset blowing, including disassembling lower, was $8500. New drive was $9k.

Occasionally you can find a CPO, certified preowned from Merc for a bit less than new, same warranty.

So given the SEI has a good warranty, if you turn your own wrenches and can swap a drive the $2k for the SEI is a good choice. Depends on what you want out of the boat. If it were a keeper I'd probably just do the new merc, otherwise SEI is a good route.

Why did you goober the sealant on the transom housing ? Was it leaking? If so you have a bigger issue than the drive....

Looks like a fun boat...

Thanks, no the transom is fine, but moreover, I'm wondering if an upper unit 1:50 wouldn't be close enough to my 1:65 to be able to compensate via prop pitch adjustment?

Is it possible?

Try it, buy/borrow some props. Have fun within the limits of your setup

One of the funnest boats I've ever driven is a 1987 glastron cv model with a 350 mag alpha drive

Came in visually/inspected stock. Carb clean with a full tune up was achieving 45 mph very quickly with phenomenal handling/on step performance. Not the nicest boat to look at but when you're at the helm it's golden

Yes likely 2” down in pitch with a 1.5 will have you at same rpm as a 1.65 with current pitch
