Re: Looking for Advice

Hi guys,

Will be glad to meet you all.

I take it we will not start until after 1-9-14.
Why don't we shoot for the first look on either 1-10, 1-11, or 1-12? Fri, Sat, or Sun......

It will help tremendously to have a fully charged battery before we get started, so as soon as you get possession, get a charger on it.
My truck will tow the boat to our work location....so don't go paying someone to move the boat around...etc.
Let's do this at little to NO cost in cash out of pocket....

Please have the students get an understanding of compression testing, as we will be doing that first.
If they could get a basic understanding of the operation of a two stroke motor...even better.
If I understand you right, this will be a learning experience for them too.
If the engine fails compression test (as it probably will) we will be pulling the heads. That is relatively
easy work.

It will be great if we have a compressor for use with air tools. Any chance of that?
We will need a very sturdy, heavy table of some sort. In the past, I have set up some cinder blocks with a pallet on them, and then top the pallet with a piece of plywood. Makes a good sturdy low table to work a powerhead on.
A cherry picker will be needed at least twice. I can bring that if needed.
We will probably need an oxyacetylene torch, too. If so, I can bring that with me. But, if you have all that stuff there, so much the better.
Don't go renting anything.....

I have all the tools we need and will bring them the first time I come up.. Once we see what we have, then we can settle on a work area, and a fixed set of equipment that will not need to be moved back and forth.

We will get it done.

Re: Looking for Advice

Daselbee: You know these engines well, but the students don't. Remember to bring a digital camera and photograph everything. That way, the students can digest and fully learn the disassembly. Then, during reassembly, you can ask them to look at photos and tell you what parts go where. They will learn much more figuring it out themselves under your guidance than you simply telling them "how to"

They will also learn that although these v6 engines look very complicated with wires and tubes running everywhere, ultimately they are really simple.

George, While you are waiting to get started here is a pdf version of the OEM manual for that engine so you and the boys can take a peek at it and get some sense of what is involved.

Boatinfo - 1992-2001 Evinrude Service manual

As someone said earlier... maybe there is hope for humans after all. :joyous:

Yeah, we will ID the motor year first. I have a '96 OEM manual that serves me on all the engines of this era...1989-2001 90* loopers.

The engines are so similar, that the info is readily "figured out" for older than 96.....
The 96 thru 2001's are the same, but this is one is older than '96, I think.

Hang loose Tim, til we ID it.....

We have air, Access to a cherry picker, I have a 2 welders, a oxy/propane torch and a toolbox full of tools, what i dont have, we can obtain readily at low or no cost. I have impacts, chisels, and ratchets with enough airhose to run down town if needed. :)

WOW....:joyous: Very cool there....

I will do it later on as we get going on this. You are right....gas will be tough on me. Orange Park, FL is a couple of hours away from me.

But it is OK....all is good.

I guess you guys want a detailed thread on here of the whole project, start to finish?

Re: Looking for Advice

Daselbee (George, right?)
You're welcome.

If you have the time to, yep, an OB overhaul thread would be good, else, just keep posting it here would work too, although an overhaul titled thread might prove a better resource for others later.

If you start a seperate thread, please post a link here so I don't miss it........

You & Harritwo decide. You may even have a techno geek amongst the students that could do the documentation, camera (still & video), editing & posting work as their contribution in addition to the hands on work.

Re: Looking for Advice

Naw....it is not George, it is Doug.

You guys....you are gonna have mixed feelings about this....

We as a team are going to be torn between doing a full blown complete, by the book, rebuild of this powerhead, OR doing just enough of a repair to get it running reliably for the Coach.

We are going to have to make the best economic decision to get to the fixed running motor goal.

So, if we start a thread, please don't expect an "Evinrude approved" proper methodology, detailed account of the whole process. There will be shortcuts taken. Lord knows....I am a shortcut taker for sure. I am very practical.

With that said, I also have to remember to teach these students the "proper" methods, not teach them the shortcuts that I know. I want them to get the basics first, then the proper way to do it, then as a last resort, if economics dictates we take a shortcut....so be it.

My real goals here reside in what these students learn...first and foremost.

Re: Looking for Advice

Sounds like a great plan. I only meant to document what you do.

Even as a repair mechanic there are lots of times time & money win over factory correct.

Safe & reliable sound great!

Re: Looking for Advice

I now have possession of the Coaches boat, Daselbee will be here Saturday Morning and the boys will get to the diagnosis and repair with Daselbee's supervision and guidance. What is the consensus on the thread, Start a new one or continue this one with the process?

This thread is in violation of the rule forbidding private transactions, but its nature is in the spirit of friendship that iboats has as one of its objectives. Another thread would fracture the story. Keep it in this thread. :)

Re: Looking for Advice

We removed the cowling off engine. We wanted to run diagnostics such as spark and compression. We attempted to roll the engine by hand and discovered that the engine was seized. Then, we pulled the starboard cylinder head because of evidence of a hole seen through number 1 spark plug hole. We snapped two bolts off in the powerhead. We discovered that number 1 and number 3 pistons we are top dead center. We attempted to move piston one and discovered it was seized. Looking through the hole we realized the connecting rod was snapped in half. After much labor and redneck engineering we removed number one piston. The connecting rod was bent and broken and had ripped a hole on the inboard side of the cylinder wall into the water jacket. The number one (or rather what is left of it) showed severe scoring, meltdown and major internal damage. The reed valves appear to be damaged but the extent is unknown due to visibility problems. There was evidence of water throughout the engine evidenced by rust throughout. At this point, we realized the block is an anchor. We decided to put the engine back together and put the cowling back on, took the batteries out for storage and charging and took it back to the school for the time being. We are trying to locate another powerhead or engine assembly to rebuild or replace the engine.

Coach Ron McCrone was very appreciative of the efforts of everyone involved. This thread is not over yet.

As a side-note, Coach's health is not very good at this time. Time is of the essence so that he might be able to drive this boat one more time.

Engine Serial number is-J200TXEDR011114 286.jpg011114 287.jpg011114 288.jpg011114 292.jpg011114 293.jpg

Thanks for all the I-boats support, especially, Doug and Rich.

Jackson and John on behalf of Coach.

Re: Looking for Advice

I just got a PM from a concerned supporter of this project. He had not seen the latest posts, so I thought I would bump this with the official position.

The engine WAS a 1996 200 25". It has had a terminal failure in that the piston for #1 is destroyed, it had separated from the rod at the wrist pin, the rod was broken in half about 2.5 inches from the small end, and the remaining rod caught the exhaust port, shoving the rod thru the block into the water chest. Brackish water entered the block, and the motor sat for 18 months until the guys decided to try this repair. The engine is locked up solid. There are pieces of reed fused to the sides of #1 cylinder.

Well done, whoever was running it when it blew. Well done.

It has a good L/U. Very smooth as I spun the prop by hand. I was surprised at how smooth it spun.

I have been looking for a suitable powerhead or donor motor, and travelled to Winter Garden, FL to examine a possible candidate. No go. Junk.

I also have a lead on a 1994 powerhead that is in Miami, but I seriously suspect it will need a sleeve, which will also make it a no go candidate.

That's where we stand. It is not looking too promising.
