A dying bred of politician. He was a fiscal conservative and a rights liberal democrat who served his country proudly and believed in the people and always held their best interest first. Lloyd Bentsen was a good guy.

Bentsen was a cheap, 2-bit politician who will be remembered for how the media preserved his asinine, out of context statement at the debate, not for any part of his service (??? – you were kidding, right?!?) to the public. <br /><br />Humm. We seem to have differing opinions.

Like most people in the public eye for many years, Bentsen is remembered for one moment of his long career.<br /><br />Too bad that moment was such a cheap, petty insult. It may have been the worst moment of his career.<br /><br />I am sure that there was a lot he did that I would admire. I just can't see it in the glare of that one moment.

You are quite amusing that his remark to Dan Quail who proved his inadequacey was simple told after comparing himself to JFK that "you sir are no Jack Kennedy," would be found as not correct in content.

These remarks from the two of you raises my interest as to what you might have thought of Sam Rayburn, another I see as a by gone politician who was fiscally conservative but liberal on the rights side.

The really neat part of the insult was that he was not a friend of Kennedy. <br /><br />The Dukakis/Bentsen ticket would have had a better chance if the names were reversed.

You may have something there. The fact that his wifes name was Kitty probably didn't help - Look Kitty Dukakis in the corner.

Ok, now I see where your love of Bentsen comes from. You two are of the same ilk.<br /><br />Let’s look at what happened that night at the debate and see if you can understand why so many of us non-communists (communists=democrats, same thing) feel Bentsen’s comment was out of context with regard to Quayle’s answer. Anyone without their thinking unit firmly embedded in their rectal unit will notice how Quayle does NOT compare himself to Kennedy, only compares the simularity of their experience. Bentsen’s dumb-assed, out of context retort completely ignores Quayle’s experience and shoots an off-topic personal attack straight at Quayle himself. The slimy part from what I remember was that was the last comment allowed in the debate. The camera zoomed in on Quayle turning red and the debate ended.<br /><br />Techno may be on to something with the Kitty Dukakis in the corner.

I really get a kick out of Repubs. They get so incensed when a dem says anything that might not give the benefit of the doubt to the poor helpless repubican, and in the very same sentence equate all democrats to communists or worse. Gag Me!!!<br /><br />Can you really think that Quayle was the most qualified person to be VP? A guy that couldn't even spell potato?

PW2, please point out any time I have called a Democrat a communist. I dont think you will be able to. <br /><br />I was not incensed by the comment, I thought it was a cheap shot taken at the end of a debate. It showed all the signs of the desperation Bentsen and the rest of the Dukakis campaign was showing.

I do all the time. The Democrat party in America IS the communist party. They are identical, one in the same, absolutely no difference between the two. I receive and read the official communist party’s news, The Peoples World Weekly. Rabbit, Another address to your ignorance in calling all Democrats communist, take a look:<br /><br />Kennedy and the Cuban missles, was not that an affront to communism,<br /><br />Nixon stopped the war, does that mean that he loved the communist and wanted them to win?,<br /><br />Reagan attacked Grenada, not a communist country was he trying to overthrow it for the communist,<br /><br />Reagan's Iran-Contra affair, what was that?<br /><br />Bush capturing Noriega, a democractic leader, exposing country to turmoil.<br /><br />And on and on. Of course none of these this was pro communism but some with the totally opposite ignorance of you might try to say it is. Name calling is supposed to be outlawed here but you started it "Democrats=Communist" McCarthyism is over chump and it was very bad then and is very sad that it is your mindset now.
