For me nothing beats Lake Mead when it is close to full. From about 1190 ft up you can power into the Grand Canyon. I've been 17 miles in. It is truly awesome. There is a little buoy marked "Now Entering Grand Canyon National Park", from that point the Canyon just jumps up at you. Our last trip in (2001) we floated by this little overlook dock thing where the Helicopter tours serve their customers Champagne overlooking the river. Kinda cool, we had three boats, bunch of kids and we were floating by people who had paid $300 each for the same view and we got to stay as long as we wanted.

No cracks about how much that trip really cost me . . .

Favorites for just plain boating, family fun.

Norfolk - Mo/Ark
Bull Shoals - Mo/Ark

Both are deep, clear and most of all, uncrowded.

As for Bass fishing I'd choose Lake of the Ozarks.
Probably the worst lake in the country for boat traffic but a great bass lake during the week and on nights during the summer.

Next on the list are a few conservation lakes with no-wake rules.

Personal favorite is Boot Lake in N. MN. (Park Rapids, MN area lake) Its a small, crystal clear (disc depth clarity of 21ft), and well protected, not crowded, etc.

My family and I love it. We stay at a resort there every 4th of July, and probably will for the next 50 years. Even on a windy day, the trees protect it so well, you can ski in almost any condition.

My favorite lake has always been the one I am closest to. :D But then again I get all excited (blood pumming, beads of sweat rolling off my forehead...) just by going near a lake.

Let's see, I live less than 2 hours from Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, Livingston, Gibbons Creek (hot water), Fayette County, Somerville, and others all great fishing, and Lake Conroe for skiing, then another 1/2 hour and we are bay fishing for Redfish and Specs, and then offshore. Darn not a Walleye, Salmon, or trout in the lot. Guess I will come see some of you guys. But for Black bass we are hard to beat.

Canyon Lake, just outside of New Braunsfels, Tx. Almost directly inbetween San Antonio, and Austin. I grew up there and haven't seen many better lakes in Texas. One of the nicer ones, plus the boating is friendly and not much traffic in the water. Good fishing near the dam, and relatively easy place to find.

I like the one and only Lake St. Clair the mini great lake. has a great water temperature, and nice sea green water.(its not as polluted as the news says, the green is from the all the vegetation since its a shallow lake)

Living in Indy, (largest city in the U.S. not on a major body of water...sigh), I have to drive a little ways.

Lake Monroe, near Bloomington, IN
Lake Cumberland, KY
Lake Wawasee, Syracuse, IN

Wawasee is VERY nice, quite a few wooden boats, a couple restaurants, channels galore.
