Well all 46 Pages read. A great project your working on. Lot's of great advice on here. Looking forward to seeing the finished product
I myself will be starting my rebuild this coming March (I hope) on the Capri 1750. I am figuring it will be stringers, floor, transom as well. Also planning custom fiberglass dash as well. I can't wait to start
Thank you. I went and looked at your boat. I remembered it once i saw it. It is a nasty PIA job and time consuming. Just take your time do it right. It is so worth it. Once you get where I am your whole attitude toward the boat changes. It sinks in this thing is new and will last forever if you take care of it.
Myself i love the size boat we got. Light fairly quick small cheap to run motors. Easy to store. Easier anyway. As my buddy who upgraded to the bigger bayliner told me. Fight the 2 foot itus. He said you rhink you want a bigger boat till you got to deal with it and the reduced mileage.
He had a boat my size his kids grew and he got the bigger boat. Because the family, kids got big and his mother in law was going out before she passed. Needed more room. Kids went to college.
Now the boat just sits because it is harder to launch and retrieve. Eats gas like a pig. He said he misses the smaller boat. He used to go out twice a day.
I was considering putting a nasty 383 in mine. Nature of the beast when your a hot rodder before you get one. He said no you don't wan't to. You just think you do. Just do my thing to the little motor. Get it out and see. He said I think you'll just say this is okay the way it is. Had me talk to other buddies with V-8 boats and the mileage they got.
Anyway my plan is this I already ported the head bigger cam. It is in the budget already. I am getting the aerostar switch pitch prop that cost more than I will have in the rest of the boat.
I figure this. The performance is worth it. 50's top speed with the final pitch combined with the engine mods and acceleration granted by the lower pitch. Cost is offset by the mileage. A similarly performing boat with a 8's mileage. factor in the gas savings and it will pay for its self the first sumer as much as i will use it. I live 10 minutes from the ramp.
I just got to get out there once it is done. Toss on a few of my buddies extra props. See what final pitch I am needing. Using the hull calculator this thing is so light it don't need much to go faster before it hits the upward spike in power needed which is the dead end for this motor size. Or any boat for that matter. Bigger engines bigger hull weight and boat size. There is a reason most factory 8 boats only do 53 MPH.
I been quiet so far about this part due to what i see in the engine/performance section. But i been PM'ing with a few and encouraged to just spill the beans. Anyway it goes it is just a toy and alot cheaper than the stupid chevelle to play with. I mean I am getting a modded restored boat for the same cost as the chevelles interior alone. So to me in my world it is a hole in the water you throw money into sure. But it is a very small hole.
I still plan to in the future add a supercharger to it once it is going for a future mod. There are a bunch of outdrive ratios out there. Once it is dialed in for the naturally aspirated engine. And the prop is there. Future changes can be compensated for with upper outdrive unit changes. There are a bunch of fast 3 liters over seas and there will be one here.
The Gm factory supercharger to a gran Prix works on the 3 liter. Few hand made aluminum parts to get it to work. Like i said i have seen quit a few in europe and they are nasty fast boats.
I am still doing my calculations on glass and foam and carpet waiting for the tax return to get here. I have been quiet on the forum. Nothing note worthy as far as progress here. But i can assure everyone. I been a busy beaver doing paperwork and calculations. Now is the time right it is winter and i can't do anything else;
Like i call the chevelle it is a never ending project. Once it is restored and I am using it. And this thread has long died due to inactivity. I will be out there doing one thing after another to this little go cart of a boat.
