Re: JB-Inflamatory Topics

Hi 2K Boat, and thank you for your comments. We all have our bad days, and weeks :( so don't be too hard on yourself. With the thousands of people who find these forums, either by contacting iboats by email with a question and then being referred to the forums, by recommendation through a friend, or while on iboats looking to buy something that's boating-related and then seeing the forums, these new people often assume, as you must have, that there are paid employees waiting to instantly answer every question imaginable about our sport. As you now know, since that's not the ways these forums work, their are good questions that may not get answered at all...and that's unfortunate. And bad or silly questions that sometimes get more than their fair share of attention and ink on these boards. As the number of people who actually participate in helping others on the forums continues to rapidly grow, we hope that there will be fewer and fewer legitimate questions that go unanswered. I also think that we can do a better job of reminding the new people who have questions to first do a key word search within our forums for already-posted answers to their questions. Too often that wealth of knowledge is not being tapped right now by new people before they jump in and ask the very same question again. In that regard, anyone with a good idea about how to accomplish this, meaning getting people to do key word searches first,...let us all know!!! :) Have a great Holiday Season!

howdy BV,
why not have the "search" page come up whenever
someone chooses to post a new topic? if that's
overboard, do it for first mates only. at least
then they'll realize it exists and how it works.
could even be part of registration.
just my .02
M.Y.

Re: JB-Inflamatory Topics

2K BOAT, I think that your last post helps us to see part of the problem. In response to my suggestion for you to do a search on the topic/question you had, you talked about not thinking to go to a search engine to get the answer. I am not talking about a search engine like Google or Yahoo. We have our own search capabilities right within the iboats forums...meaning your ability to search all previous posts in all the iboats forums for all topics/words that have ever been posted with us (except those lost by Steve  ). We list those search links in two different places at the top of every page of our forums. 1. As the last link in the "Helpful Links" section and printed in a red/brown color (I added the quotation marks here in this post for clarity); and 2. right under that link it again says "SEARCH" in brighter red letters. By clicking on either of these searches, it takes you to the same page within our forums engine where you have several search options. There is a box on that search page where you can then type in any word or series of words you are interested in researching and then you can click on the SEARCH button at the bottom of that page. By doing that, this search tool will then search throughout the iboats posts in all our forums, and provide you with all of the posts that were made that include that word or series of words. This is a wonderful way to get great information on any boating subject...thanks to all of the great people who have been SO willing to help each other in our forums. And obviously, as more and more people come in and add their experiences, ideas, suggestions and tips to the forums, this search feature will bring up more and more potentially very helpful information...for everyone's benefit. Sorry if I went on a bit on this topic but I'm particularly pleased with and excited about our forums and what so many thousands of people have already contributed to them! :)

Mellowyellow...good ideas for us to consider on this issue. Thanks! :) We certainly do need to do something beyond what we are currently doing to help the new...and many not-so-new...forum users/visitors to better understand the search capabilities within our forums. It will just make it easier and faster for them to get the information they want, and it may also help prevent the early-on frustrations that 2K BOAT and some others have felt when their question is not answered instantly. And it certainly will help all of our great forum participants to not have to answer the same question ad nauseum! Anyone with additional ideas, please jump in. We love good ideas!!! :D

Topic: Suggestions for new posters
"5. Don't add a new question to someone elses topic. If you have a question, make a new topic."
This is "JB-Inflamatory Topics", so what are you talking about? Manners and behaviours among new and not so new members? Thats funny, isn't it? ;)
Sorry, I just had to...

Search engine, I had no luck in the beginning so let me put my .02 here too. (Yeah, why don't I start a new topic myself?)

- Use only the most likely section. That will save you a lot of time. Outboard Engine Troubles & Questions? Search the Outboard Engine Troubles & Questions Section .

- Add a word or two to narrow it down. Words that you expecting to find in the replies you are looking for. "chrysler parts www" will give you a lot of good links if you are looking for Chrysler parts.

- You can also use a specific members number to narrow it down even more. Like one of our trusted admirals numbers. Or some of the captains who we also recogninze by their knowledge.
If you do that you can use less words. But remember might you have to try a few times to get it.

This will save you some time, rather than post and wait for a reply. I use the search engine and like it. I quite often use it for others, rather than just say "use the search funtion". (Search, copy URL, hit "Reply" button, hit "URL" button, paste, name the link, hit "Add Reply". Done.

I don't this will change anything, but since you asked... Who else will find it in this "JB-Inflamatory Topics-topic" :D
