Re: Is it worth it? '98 Larson 5.7GS DP Lower Transom Rot

I just finished a transom rebuild and had fuel issues when I got everything put back together. My problem ended up being some small fiberglass chunks got into my fuel tank fill line. When I added gas to the tank, it ended up flushing into the tank and getting picked up into my fuel lines. I found it trapped in my anti-siphon valve and restricting the fuel flow.

By the way, that is a GREAT looking boat. Glad you decided to restore her.

Thanks spark! It was a battle I was dealing with before this restore was started. I had multiple fits that were getting worse and worse, eg it would start and run great for a couple hours and then all the sudden she would be really hard to start, after lots of pumping or would not start at all, without pouring gas into the carb and priming the system. Anywho, I relaced the pump last thursday night and so far (knock on wood) so good!

Good to hear you found it (knock on wood). Within a couple of days of finding my fuel line clogged, I had to change my fuel pump as well. With the plugged fuel line, it would run only for a couple of minutes before it would shut down (starving for fuel). Once that was fixed, it started dying after about 5-10 minutes. After replacing the fuel pump it hasn't died since.

Glad you got her back going. Did you post your transom repair in a thread?

Again, I like to thank WOG, GT1, Jim and all others that have been a great help to get me to this point. Today I was able to test out the boat and she did GREAT! I still have some rather cosmetic items to finish up, but other than that this boat is just about complete. The SeaDek turned out pretty good. I would say great, but it was a little more gold than I had expected.

Here are some shots of today. Decided to boat in the Arkansas River today, I had never been, it worked out fine for the purpose.

My bosses approve. Ha!

That's what it's all about right there! That's why I bought my boat. Having a boat is not a financial investment...it's a family investment that pays it's dividends in memories that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Nice job! Glad to see that beautiful boat back on the water!

Will we be treated to a complete pictoral tour of your 'new' boat? I hope so...

Congratulations on the successful SPLASH with the added benefit of crew approval!
Fantastic Job! You've made the Iboats gang proud!
When you get the time, don't forget to add this great resto to this section of the forum.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this long detailed post. I have the same boat, 1997 226 SEI, with guess what? And I just repowered with a nice running 383 block, and lo and behold, I missed the leaky transom while I was spending months on that motor. Runs great. I do not have enough rot to see it yet, but a simple screw-driver through the transom glass showed that she is not going back in the water. I think it was 2013 I re-did the floors, so I'm not scared, but I may be just goofy enough to ask for more of this pain. With the guidance of this write-up, I have a plan. Months to go, I'm sure, but thanks to HalfFish big time!
